ما هي الترجمة؟

عمل الترجمة يتمحور في عملية توصيل المعنى من النص الأصلي عن طريق نص مستهدف مقابل له. وبينما تسبق عملية الترجمة الفورية عملية الكتابة، فقد بدأت الترجمة بعد ظهور الأدب الكتابي. فقد تمت حينها ترجمة العمل "ملحمة جلجامش" (عام 2000 قبل الميلاد) إلى لغات جنوب غرب آسيا.

لطالما يجازف المترجمون بالانعكاسات الغير ملائمة لمصطلح "اللغة الأصلية" واستخدامه على ترجمة اللغة المستهدفة. ومن ناحية أخرى فإن هذه الانعكاسات جلبت العديد من الكلمات المستعارة والألفاظ الدخيلة من اللغة الأصلية وأغنت بها اللغة المستهدفة. وبالفعل فإن المترجمين قد ساعدوا بشكل أساسي بتشكيل اللغات التي كانوا يقومون بالنقل إليها.

استناداً إلى متطلبات توثيق الأعمال التي نتجت عن الثورة الصناعية التي بدأت في منتصف القرن الثامن عشر، فقد أصبح بعض مختصي الترجمة يُصنَعون صُنعاً من خلال مدارس متخصصة وجمعيات مهنية.

وبسبب الجهد الذي يُبذَل في عملية الترجمة، فمنذ الأربعينيات سعى المهندسون إلى أتمتة الترجمة (الترجمة الآلية) أو إلى مساعدة الترجمة البشرية آلياً (الترجمة باستخدام الحاسوب). وقد شجع تطور شبكة الانترنت السوق العالمي على خدمات الترجمة وسهل عملية توطين اللغة.
