Massive news released in Dubai this week! Local authorities announced they are relaxing some Islamic laws and implementing the following changes👇

➡️ If married couples get divorced, the rules of their local country will apply, not the UAE’s.

➡️ Unmarried couples can now live together legally.

➡️ Should someone pass away; their citizenship dictates how their assets are divided - unless they have a will. If, however, they have local property, this will still be managed under UAE law.

➡️ Su***de and attempted su***de will now be decriminalized.

➡️ If you choose to intervene when someone is in need (i.e. they may be suffocating and needing CPR), you cannot be held liable anymore.

➡️ Men who harass woman will face tougher punishment.

➡️ Alcohol consumption is no longer a criminal offence (as long as you’re over 21!)

➡️ If you are going to court and do not speak or understand Arabic, the court must provide you with a translator.

These are welcomed changes for UAE residents old and new and will only make the country a more attractive place to live. It should also have a positive impact on the economy in the years ahead.

One of the biggest mistakes many of our expat friends have made on arrival was not grabbing a local sim card as they landed. Many are eager to get out of the airport as fast as possible. But not having a local sim limits your ability to access data on the go, call home and have a local number to update your resume.

There are four mobile providers in the UAE – Virgin mobile, Du, Etisalat and Swyp – all of which have a variety of different packages on offer, including short-stay 7-14 day packages, and standard prepaid and postpaid plans. We opted for Virgin Mobile and were set up within 20 minutes, only needing our passport and payment.

All providers have a presence at most terminals. Have a look in Arrivals if you can’t find them on exit. It’s worth noting, to continue using a local sim past 30 days, you will need a valid Emirates ID or visa.

Trying to navigate what salary you could earn by ?

Did you know the majority of large recruitment companies across the UAE will publish salary guides each year?

These guides notate what the average professional earns in that role.

When searching for roles in Dubai, there is a lot of new information to take in.

For instance: most salary packages are broken up into basic salary and benefits, which can include anything from health insurance and accommodation, to transportation allowances and flights home.

Generally, a package is much higher than countries like the UK.

For example, among junior administration workers, AED 15,000 a month (approximately GBP 3000) would be considered low, while AED 20,000 (approximately GBP 4000) for a PA would be considered fairly standard. On an annual salary, that would equate to over GBP 46,000 tax-free as there is no income tax.

In addition to this, you've also got Health Insurance, Gratuity, Annual Leave, Children's Education... the list goes on.

Want to dive deep and get your head around it all?
