Built in 1900, the former house of Tan Teng Niah is the last surviving Chinese villa in Little India. It embodies an often overlooked story of the days when small Chinese industries operated alongside the cattle and rattan businesses at Little India. Behind the house, Tan had a rubber smoke-house for drying rubber which used the by-products of sugarcane as fuel for its furnace.

The pintu pagar (Malay for “swinging wooden half doors”) is richly carved and the front room of the house is resplendent with wall scrolls. Over the entrance door is a gilded name plate with the calligraphic inscription Siew Song (“elegant pine” or “refined pine” in Mandarin). To the Chinese, pine denotes endurance and expresses their aspirations. Many believe that Tan built the house for his wife and that the inscription referred to her.

The house was restored and conserved in the 1980s for commercial use, and the restoration project was awarded the Singapore Institute of Architects Honourable Mention in 1991.

As you scour through the roads and alleys of Singapore mural wall paints will never fail to fascinate you. While Graffiti is illegal in Singapore that doesn’t stop young budding artists to display their skills through aesthetically drawn art forms. There are umpteen opportunities for a tourist and a resident to witness those arts as you stroll through the clean allies of the city. The murals not only depict the bright culture of the society but also tells us stories of the city through the eyes of these artists.

The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum is a Buddhist temple and museum complex located in the Chinatown district of Singapore. The temple is based on the Tang dynasty architectural style and built to house the tooth relic of the historical Buddha. It is claimed that the relic of Buddha from which it gains its name was found in 1980 in a collapsed stupa in Myanmar. The relic can be viewed by the public at the 4th floor of the temple.

The family of cotton-top tamarins generally comprises of the dad, Mam and kids. Dad is generally the ‘boss’. Tamarins generally are found in twins and triplets.
