When a cruise ship is launched, it marks the completion of a vessel built entirely from ground up, delivered to a fixed date.

Within the final phase of the shipbuilding timeline, we install the sculptural elements we have fabricated. By this stage the environment is largely complete, finishes are in place, access is controlled, and schedules are tightly constrained. Every element must be sequenced and handled with precision under strict marine protocols.

For the two stainless steel turtles at the Pearl Cafe aboard Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas, installation involved manoeuvring each part into position and aligning them within the space. Due to their scale, the turtles were delivered in multiple parts, with connections resolved on site and surfaces protected during assembly. The installation transformed these components into a cohesive sculptural form, fully integrated within a live marine environment 🚢🔧

Revisiting ‘ELLSS’ by Maylis and Charles Tassin.

The success of this chandelier lies not only in its form, but in its material resolution. Developed from 3D printed components and sand cast in recycled aluminium, each element was structurally welded and patinated to achieve both strength and surface depth.

Aluminium was not simply an aesthetic choice. Its structural lightness, casting precision, and ability to accept an aged finish enabled a balance between structural integrity and organic expression, making it essential to translating the designers’ vision into a durable, sculptural form. Demonstrating that every design decision, down to the material, contributes to timeless presence ⏳✨

“Two bodies barely touching, brushing, embracing… This lamp is a love ballad.”

Conceived as a duet, the DAMM lamp combines plaster sculptures with an oversized shade supported by beaten iron rods. The figures take shape through mass and scale, simple yet expressive, as if modelled in clay.

We first manufactured the piece in 2023 and are reproducing it this year. 3D printing is used to create moulds that retain the softness, balance, and surface detail of the original forms. The process preserves the relationship between the two bodies, ensuring the essence of the piece remains intact.

A stroll through the forms invites you to capture the vision of Galerie MAY, embodied in intimacy and love 💟

Across three landmark projects, MDM collaborated with Studio Roso to bring ambitious large-scale sculptural installations and intricate designs into reality.

In 2023, ‘Connected’ for Air Products brought together over 10,000 precision-cast aluminium components into a geodesic installation celebrating human diversity and interconnectedness. The piece was preassembled into 16 sections before installation in Allentown, Philadelphia.

Also in 2023, ‘Whale Song’ for Royal Caribbean Group aboard Icon of the Seas spans 13 meters, featuring hundreds of hand-hammered aluminium barnacles and nickel-plated brass jellyfish mounted on a stainless steel skeletal structure.

In 2025, ‘Celestial Turtles’ for Royal Caribbean Group abroad Star of the Seas transforms Pearl Cafe into an immersive underwater scene with 990 mirror-polished stainless steel fish, 12 glazed ceramic corals, and two turtles measuring 4m and 3.5m, all fabricated and installed with careful attention to scale and structural integrity.

These are just a few highlights of MDM’s collaboration with Studio Roso – More can be viewed in our earlier feed posts 🖼️

We’re giving a first look at this playful flamingo installation, crafted from fibreglass and stainless steel, which was seamlessly integrated into the Central Park deck of the Icon of the Seas cruise ship.

Installed in Cadiz, Spain, in 2024, this piece is one of several customised elements designed and fabricated specifically for the ship, adding a unique touch to its distinctive features.🦩

Artist Shezad Dawood has reimagined six of Doha’s most iconic buildings as playful objects. 🪄

Collaborating with architect Fatma Al Sehlawi, Dawood designed miniature versions of key modernist structures, including the Central Post Office, National Theatre, and Qatar University, creating a unique space for play and learning.

Constructed primarily from glass reinforced concrete (GRC), the pieces were finished to evoke the contemporary, weathered aesthetic of the original buildings, reflecting how these structures are perceived in the public imagination.

This festive season, we’re reminiscing on a captivating project: a 12-meter Christmas Tree installation at Westfield Stratford, UK, realized in collaboration with - and the fantastic team at Sculptivate.

Fabricated in our workshop, this awe-inspiring structure comprised 528 steel rods meticulously angled into cascading triangles and interconnected by 174 3D-printed bronze nodes. Inspired by the Northern Lights, the walk-through tree showcased illuminated mirrored panels, creating an immersive and kaleidoscopic experience. 🎄
