#4 Ways to Exhibit Emotional Intelligence as a Leader Post-Crisis!

Let's face it, we are all tired and in search of a glimmer of hope. Right?

Thankfully, as vaccinations lessen the threat of the global health crisis, there appears to be some light at the end of the tunnel. For many leaders, there may be a strong urge to "bring home the troops," so to speak, and to ramp up business as usual.

With the onset of the crisis, organizations entered unchartered territories. They were forced into a seesaw, trying to achieve the balance of dealing with both accelerated change and adjustments to any original strategic blueprints. At the helm of the wheel, navigating toward what appears to be the tail end of the crisis looks exciting. But navigating a ship to recovery without first assessing the ship's inventory is a failed mission.

So, how do we start? Cue emotional intelligence.

1. Dig deeper
Avoid the temptation of settling for the surface-level textbook response. For many, this may mean seeking funds to revamp, restart or hire new staff. Yet, to reach the core of the matter, leaders need to connect emotionally and dig deeper.

Recently, I was on a women’s leadership call, where one of the leaders, Ijeoma Michelle Daramola, crafted an analogy of emotional intelligence akin to an open faucet. Daramola, a highly experienced global financial expert, said leadership in these times requires "an overflowing supply of emotional intelligence." In high doses, this ensures leaders are able to understand their feelings in this climate before making crucial organizational decisions.

2. Seek help
As leaders circumventing a new normal in a post-crisis era, acting on impulse may push our ships to crash into a massive rock. Leaders are human first and have also been impacted in many ways personally and professionally. Self-awareness is key. Not fully grasping one's emotions now, can lead to making the wrong decisions in business deals, signing or dissolving crucial contracts, or termination of important employees.

An important step for any leader to take is to seek help on how to fully understand your own emotions. What are some of your rampant thoughts?

Research from the National Institute of Mental Health shows that some men who are depressed are more likely to disguise their emotion as anger. Now, think about how dangerous it could be to mislabel your own emotion and then make a decision based on it.

For example, a company CEO may be sad and depressed about lost revenue during the pandemic, but unable to adequately process the emotion, he labels it as anger and reacts based on that. This could mean getting upset during a management meeting, which could have a negative ripple effect.

On the other hand, if the CEO had successfully identified the emotion, through journaling or therapy sessions, then that would have been dealt with properly. The behavior response would also be different. The management meeting could have been more productive, as they collectively would have come up with solutions to help increase revenue.

3. Connect with employees
Practice emotional solidarity and empathy. Prior to any important meeting (individual or group), consider spending time to approach the meeting from the state of mind of your employee. Think about the issues that could be affecting them outside of work as a result of the global health crisis. This could mean anything from lingering health issues, reengaging in society after an extensive period of self-isolation, trying to recover from financial hardships among other crisis-related issues.

4. Encourage healthy communication
For many who have spent extensive time away from an office setting, there may be a disconnect among employees. This can easily lead to a breakdown in teamwork and collaboration efforts. Leaders should ensure that there is an increase in more authentic communication methods. This could mean being more vulnerable about struggles faced during the past year. A leader sharing a story of dealing with the long-term effects of the global health crisis can go a long way toward motivating employees who may still be dealing with loved ones in the same situation. Providing more training to assist employees with handling difficult clients (equally affected by the crisis) and protecting their mental health could boost overall performance.

While leaders may feel pressured to hit the accelerator right now to recover all, it is important to dial in to emotional intelligence. This will provide the refreshing needed to ignite and motivate the entire team.

Highly successful leaders are exceptional critical thinkers. Here are five ways to improve your approach to strategic problem-solving and decision-making.

As a strategic business coach, one of my core responsibilities is leveling up leadership skills on the senior team. I like to say, if you want to grow and scale a business, you have to grow and scale its leadership. And one of the key skills I focus on is critical thinking.
As a business grows in size, so does the complexity and scope of its problems and challenges. Without good critical thinking skills, leaders will make poor decisions and fail to take advantage of strategic opportunities. Very often, what holds the business back from reaching its true potential is a lack of leadership's foresight and effective problem-solving skills.

Here are five key things that I focus on when working with leaders to improve their ability to identify, analyze, solve, and implement effective problem-solving strategies.

1. Gather more and better data
The first thing I emphasize is that most teams try to make decisions with limited and poor quality data. Good critical thinkers start by collecting as much high-quality data as possible. They don't take things at face value. They question summaries and dig to make sure that they really understand what's happening on the ground and maximize the raw information they have to work with.

This includes both structured and unstructured data as well as quantitative and qualitative information. It's also important to look at history and trends and to compare the data you're looking at with other benchmarks and norms. Good thinkers don't rely upon summaries and averages, they go back to the source and get the raw information.

2. Learn how to separate fact from inference
Once you've collected information, it's key to understand the difference between facts and inferences. Too often leaders will make assumptions about what's really true and treat them as facts when what they are really dealing with is an inference. This creates a shaky foundation for any future thinking and decision-making.

A fact is objectively observable by other people. An inference is something that includes an assumption or an opinion that may or may not be true. If you literally drive from New York to L.A and it takes 58 hours, that's a fact. If you use a map to calculate the distance and estimate an average speed to get to 58 hours, that is an inference. Don't confuse the two.

3. Break things down to first principles
I encourage leaders and teams to think in first principles. These are the fundamental building blocks in thinking and decision-making. They are the core elements that are true regardless of situation and context.
They generally are found by asking clarifying questions, considering alternatives, and testing assumptions. Once you have a good set of first principles, you then have the elements that you need to start creating new options and new solutions that you can be confident in.
For example, the first principle in tennis is that a ball hit with topspin will fall faster than one hit with backspin. A good tennis player knows how to use this in different scenarios to create strategic effects. By combining this with other principles, an expert player can make plays that leverage their strengths and exploit their opponent's weaknesses.

4. Develop effective models
Another tool that can be very effective for teams and leaders is thinking in terms of models or analogies. While these are an abstraction and reduction of reality, and therefore wrong at some level, they can be useful for simplifying a situation and quickly finding alternatives and strategies.

For example, economies of scale is a model for how price changes with volume. While a specific situation may not follow the model perfectly, it can help a business figure out how to gain efficiencies by increasing the volume while holding costs the same.
The trick with models is to know where and why they work and how they can fall short. Models can help you quickly generate insights and strategies, but you need to be aware of their limits and not get lulled into a false sense of security about reality.

5. Continuously challenge your assumptions
Maybe the most important thing I focus on with leaders and teams is to create ways of testing and validating their assumptions quickly. If left unchecked, an assumption can lead to poor thinking and bad decision-making. This can be avoided by quickly going out into the real world and seeing if what you're assuming holds up in the field.
By developing your critical thinking skills, you'll improve your decision-making and ultimately get better outcomes and long-term results. And while some of these steps may take some time and energy, they are good investments and will yield strong returns.

to think like a Successful Entrepreneur?

Entrepreneurship is about treading new ground. It is about taking a step no one has taken before, at least not in that same way or in the same place. So it should not be surprising that much of the scholarly literature on entrepreneurship, since Richard Cantillon in the early 1700s, has focused on entrepreneurship as uncertainty-bearing.

Although “bearing uncertainty” might be what entrepreneurs do in the economy from a theorist’s point of view, it is not — and should not be — the rationale for starting a business. After all, uncertainty means the outcome is unknown, which, in turn, means it could end up ugly. In other words, uncertainty is a cost — it is a burden on the entrepreneur’s shoulders. Entrepreneurs are right to attempt to avoid the uncertainty.

The fact is that theorists have it both right and wrong. Yes, entrepreneurs bear uncertainty because they are the ones getting the reward as profit and also the ones suffering the loss if things do not work out. But that uncertainty-bearing characterizes entrepreneurship does not make it the point of being an entrepreneur. Rather, it is a “necessary evil.”
