Field Note: Three businesses. Three different interventions.
Imagine three businesses all say:
“Our employees spend too much time handling customer requests.”
At first glance, AI might seem like an obvious answer.
But look closer.
1️⃣ Business A
Most requests are predictable and follow clear rules.
The problem is repetitive data entry.
🎯 Potential intervention: Automation.
2️⃣ Business B
Employees spend too much time searching across documents and internal information before responding.
The information exists, but accessing it is difficult.
🎯 Potential intervention: Better information access—and potentially AI-assisted search.
3️⃣ Business C
Customer requests are complex and require understanding unstructured information before deciding what to do.
🎯 Here, AI may have a more meaningful role.
Three businesses.
Similar symptom.
Different problems.
Different interventions.
This is why starting with:
“We need AI.”
can be the wrong starting point.
Start with:
“What exactly is happening?”
Then investigate the evidence.
Then identify the opportunity.
Then choose the intervention.
Business Problem → Evidence → Opportunity → Right Intervention → Outcome
AI can be part of that journey.
It just shouldn't replace the journey.
Evidence Over Guesswork.
Illustrative examples, not client cases.
