🎬 Exploring Vienna with Netflix DACH!

FILM in AUSTRIA had the pleasure of welcoming the Netflix DACH team to Vienna for a day and a half of exploring the city as a filming destination.

From a visit to hq7 studios and a look inside its LED Cave to panoramic views from the Giant Ferris Wheel, an autumn walk through the Prater and the striking architecture of the WU campus: Vienna offered a variety of perspectives and locations.

What do we actually want AI to do for us? 🎬

That was the key question at the Mediatech Hub Conference in Potsdam, Germany, where we were on site last week. Not "let’s use AI because we can," but: Where does it actually make sense?

Here are our takeaways from the conference:

🎬 AI is already in production: German case studies and insights from guest country UK show it’s being tested across the filmmaking process.
💡 Faster and cheaper is not the story: The better question is what AI can enable that audiences have never experienced before.
🤝 Not humans vs. AI: We need to learn how to work together.
🌍 Europe builds, America buys: Many European streaming and tech startups end up being acquired by U.S. or Asian players.

Besides these insights, one number made us think: according to a BITKOM study, 29% of people in Germany would find it acceptable if an AI-generated film won an Oscar.

FILM in AUSTRIA was proud to be Anchor Destination of the Association of Film Commissioners International | AFCI Lounge at the Toronto International Film Festival 2026, connecting with industry professionals from around the world.

On the panel "Filming History: Production Opportunities in Austria and Portugal", we joined and Portugal Film Commission to showcase what both countries offer for period productions.
While our panel looked at bringing history to the screen, another session looked firmly ahead: "Financing in the Age of AI". It explored how artificial intelligence is already reshaping the audiovisual sector, from funding processes and audience analysis to pitching and content creation. Our key takeaways:

⚙️ AI can streamline admin in funding agencies, but creative decisions should stay human-led.
🔍 Transparency around AI use is becoming essential.
🤝 Entry-level jobs are evolving, which may make industry entry more challenging. At the same time, as AI-generated content grows, personal relationships and face-to-face meetings gain value.
Countries like Norway and Germany are already exploring new approaches through AI-related co-creation initiatives. We’ll be watching closely.

Smart budgeting starts with knowing the rules. Here is how to optimize your production budget in Austria! 🎥💶

Navigating local film funding incentives can be complex, but knowing what is eligible is key to optimizing your budget. Here is a quick breakdown of eligible projects and key expenses for international productions:

🎬 Eligible projects: International cinema, TV, and streaming films & series (service productions, including production parts) as well as Austrian TV/streaming projects.

💶 Core expense criteria: Costs directly incurred in Austria (excl. VAT) for the project, adhering to sound economic management principles.

👥 Wages & honorariums: Eligible for personnel with Austrian tax liability, calculated according to collectively agreed minimum rates.

✈️ Travel & accommodations: Flights with AT origin/destination (up to Business Class), local rental cars, train travel, overnight stays, and catering.

🚫 Not eligible: Costs incurred prior to the application date, except for preparatory works like casting and location scouting.

25,000 euros, supporting female Heads of Department.

Under FISAplus, that flat bonus is added to a grant when a project reaches a target score for women in head departments. For production parts the bonus is 2,500 euros. It always comes on top of an existing FISAplus grant, never on its own, and only where additional financing is still needed.

Head departments are where the creative decisions are made. That is where the incentive puts its weight.

The useful part: the score is not left to interpretation. A Pre-Check file assigns points to head department positions, productions fill it in themselves and submit it with the application. And if a head department is shared equally between several people, the position can still score the maximum.

Most international productions come to Austria for the locations. But FISAplus also funds individual production parts, which means a project can bring just one piece of work here and still be eligible:

🎬 Picture and sound post-production
✨ Animation and VFX
🎵 Film music

The threshold is 25,000 euros in eligible costs per application. Applications can be submitted at the earliest 10 months prior to the start of work on the respective production component and must be filed before any costs are incurred.

That last point is where projects lose money they could have had.

What if your next medieval world already existed? 🏰🎬

High above the Danube, Kreuzenstein Castle offers exactly the kind of setting filmmakers usually have to build from scratch. Its towers, courtyards, stone walls and historic interiors make it a striking backdrop for period drama, fantasy and adventure. And with Vienna only around 30 minutes away, this cinematic location is surprisingly close to one of Austria’s main production hubs.

International productions have already discovered its potential: Kreuzenstein Castle served as a filming location for Season of the Witch, starring Nicolas Cage, Netflix's The Witcher and Disney+'s Shardlake as well as the second season of Sky's The Day of the Jackal. What makes Kreuzenstein especially interesting is its history: after the original medieval castle was destroyed, it was reconstructed from the late 19th century onwards, creating an elaborate historic setting filled with authentic architectural elements and collections.

Sustainable filmmaking is gaining momentum in Austria. 🌿🎬
Sustainability is no longer a trend in film production – it's becoming the new standard. 🌍

Across Austria's film industry, sustainability is becoming an increasingly important part of film production. One example is the FISAplus Green Bonus, which rewards productions that meet defined Green Filming criteria with an additional financial incentive.
Productions that meet the defined Green Filming criteria can receive an additional 5% Green Bonus, increasing the FISAplus incentive from 30% to up to 35%.

Sustainable filmmaking includes measures such as:

· 🌿 Working with a certified Green Film Consultant
· 🚛 Reducing transport emissions and avoiding unnecessary flights
· ♻️ Reusing sets, props and costumes wherever possible
· ⚡ Using renewable electricity, energy-efficient equipment and sustainable catering with regional suppliers
