Can compostable packaging go in a WA FOGO bin? Not automatically.

Waste Authority WA’s July 2026 guidance says kerbside FOGO is for food organics, garden organics and certified compostable caddy liners only. Under the updated guidance, specified other compostable and non-recyclable packaging is directed to general waste.

This should not be read as a new statewide law banning compostable packaging from FOGO. Local councils and collection services can have different operational arrangements, so current local guidance still matters.

It is also worth separating two questions: what a compostability certification establishes about a product, and whether a particular collection system accepts that exact packaging format. One does not automatically answer the other.
