On Friday morning I had the honour of photographing the annual International Women’s Day Breakfast at Government House for the second year in a row.
It was an inspiring morning hearing from award-winning ABC journalist Sally Sara AM as the keynote speaker. Sally shared powerful insights from her time reporting in some of the world’s most challenging environments. Sally said something that hit home “The most dangerous place for a woman to be is not a war zone - it’s in her own home. And for women who are in those dangerous situations on the domestic front, that is their country, and they may have little power, not much at all. They are little countries. So, what we do in families, as aunties, as mothers, as grandmothers, as great-grandmothers, as people in the community, as teachers, that is equally as important.”
Hearing Sally’s words, and Her Excellency’s equally moving remarks on the collective responsibility we all share to create a more just world for women and girls, was incredibly motivating.
These are the kinds of events and messages that fill me with hope and determination as a woman and a storyteller. Grateful to have been there to capture it all and to be surrounded by such inspiring women.
