Summer is nearing, and it definitely tests a uniform collection.

Imagine a 40 degree day.

Your team are in and out of hot vehicles between jobs. Then they walk into an office where the air conditioning is cranking and suddenly they're cold.

There is no one-trick-pony garment solution here.

And that's an important consideration.

When I'm developing a uniform or corporate wear collection, I'm not looking for one garment that somehow does everything. I'm looking at how the collection works together for the different people, roles and conditions across the business.

So, long before anything is ordered, I'm asking questions like:
- Does the fabric breathe, or does it cling?
- Will the garment be creased by smoko?
- Is there sun protection for the people working outside?
- Is there an appropriate layer for those who freeze in an air-conditioned environment?
- And will everything stand up to being worn and washed every week, or several times a week, depending on the allocation?

Because the reality of an Adelaide summer shouldnt be an afterthought when you're choosing uniforms or corporate wear.

The climate needs to be part of the brief from day one.

You're not looking for the perfect garment. You're building the right collection from the get-go.

The best uniform decisions are rarely made in December.

But that's often when they happen.

The new year is coming, corporate wear is on the list, and it feels like a straightforward job, so it gets rushed through before everyone breaks up for Christmas. Styles picked from a catalogue, order placed, logo added.

Then January arrives. People start wearing it. And something isn't right. A style that only suits half the team. A garment that doesn't hold up across different roles. A supplier who's just as flat out as everyone else in peak season.

Getting it right the second time almost always costs more than getting it right the first. In money, in time, and in the goodwill of the people wearing it.

If a new uniform or corporate wear collection is on your list for the end of this year or early next year, the smarter move is to start the thinking now, while there's still time to do it properly.

Consistency is not sameness.

One of the biggest misconceptions I see in uniform programs is the idea that everyone needs to wear the same garments for the team to look cohesive.

New businesses thinking about branded corporate wear will often call me and say they need a polo.

Usually, they don’t.

In most businesses, people are doing varied roles and tasks. Some are client-facing. Some are in and out of vehicles. Some are working outdoors. Some need more movement, more durability or more protection. Others may need a more polished level of presentation.

Trying to put all of those people into the same uniform can actually create more problems than it solves.
A well-designed uniform collection creates consistency without sameness.

That means different garments for different roles, different levels of dress for different environments, and carefully selected options that allow for fit, comfort and individual needs and preferences.

The key is that visually, everything belongs together. We can see that everyone is part of the same team, while what they are wearing is fit for purpose.

The colour palette is cohesive. The branding is consistent. The level of presentation makes sense. The collection reflects the business and brand, even when everyone is not dressed identically.

That is the difference between simply choosing a couple of garments in your brand colours and designing a uniform collection.

When I’m developing a collection, I’m not asking, “How do we make everyone look the same?”

I’m asking:
“How do we create a consistent brand presence across people who are doing very different jobs?”

That is a much more useful question.

And it leads to a much better uniform program.

One of the best things about running a workshop is seeing a room full of people start looking at something they do every day in a completely different way.

Today I had the pleasure of presenting BRAND YOU as part of Resilient You, Resilient Business for Small Business Week.

My session explored the role our personal presentation plays in the way we show up in business, from those first few seconds when impressions are formed, through to credibility, confidence and my Straight A Image formula:

Appropriate + Attractive + Authentic = Assured

With Small Business Week this year focused on resilience and capability building, we also looked at practical ways to use personal presentation more strategically, so you can prepare, dress and show up well, even on an off day.

And, of course, we had some fun with colour along the way.

The response in the room and the conversations afterwards were very rewarding, and this is exactly why I love presenting on this topic.

Why buying garments from a fashion range and adding a logo rarely works

One question I’m asked from time to time is, “Can we just buy what we like from a fashion store and have our logo added?”

The garment might look fantastic and be beautifully made, but that does not necessarily make it suitable for an ongoing uniform program.

For close to 25 years, my work has spanned both sides of this conversation. As a personal stylist, I work closely with fashion brands and retail ranges. I also help businesses develop corporate wear and uniform solutions.

Fashion brands and uniform suppliers are designed to do very different jobs.
Fashion collections are generally built around seasons, trends and changing ranges. A successful uniform collection relies on continuity, repeatability, an inclusive size range and the ability to place ongoing orders when they are needed.

The first order from a fashion retailer may be straightforward. The problem often comes six months later, when a new employee starts, a replacement garment is needed or the team requires a broader range of sizes.

By then, the garment may have disappeared from the range altogether.
There is also the practical question of whether the fabric, construction and care requirements will withstand the frequent wear and laundering expected of a uniform.

None of this means fashion brands cannot produce beautiful, high-quality garments. It simply means that a beautiful garment and a suitable uniform are not always the same thing.

The right uniform should look modern, feel cohesive and reflect the brand, while also being supported by a reliable, long-term supply solution.

I believe the goal is to find the balance between what feels authentically you, what suits your profession and your role, and what works practically for your day-to-day business life.

That is exactly what I help clients work through in my one-on-one professional styling sessions. I take a strategic look at what their wardrobe needs to do and help them create one that feels polished, practical and authentic.

When I present to teams or business owners about personal presentation, one of the ideas we explore is that the way we show up is something we can prepare for and be in control of.

As a business owner myself, I know how often business can feel uncertain and how many things sit outside our control. Being prepared in the way we show up will not solve every challenge, but it can offer a certain kind of resilience. It gives us one less stress point and helps us focus on the workday ahead.

Let’s talk about merch…

So often, merch is treated as either a quick decision or a cheap one.

A few caps for an event, some drink bottles for a conference, a hoodie for the volunteers, a tote bag with a logo on it…

There is nothing wrong with any of those items. They can all be excellent choices.

The problem is when they are not well thought through.

Once that item leaves your hands, it becomes part of how people experience your brand.

It might be worn by your staff, handed to clients, photographed at an event, taken to the gym, or carried around every day.

That is why merch needs more thought.

Some of the questions I work through when considering merch for a client are:

• Who is this for?
• Where will they use it?
• Is it something they would genuinely choose to wear or keep?
• Does the quality reflect the business and the brand?
• Is the branding too much, too little, or just right?
• Does the colour work with the logo?
• Is the decoration method right for the item?
• Is this the right product for the purpose?

Good merch does not have to be expensive, but it does need to be considered.

The right merch can create visibility, build connection and give people something useful to associate with your business.

The wrong merch can end up in the back of a cupboard or, worse, in the bin, which is not a great result for your budget or your brand.

Merch should not be an afterthought. It should be part of the bigger picture.

A sizing range that misses a significant portion of the workforce. Back to the drawing board, this time with less budget and a team that's already unimpressed.

What you give your staff to wear tells them how much they matter.

That is a bold statement, but it is true.

Uniforms are often treated as a practical purchase. A box to tick. Something to sort out quickly, get logoed, and move on from.

But what a business dresses its people in says a great deal.

If the range is modern, comfortable, flattering, and clearly curated with different body types, roles and working conditions in mind, staff know they have been thought about properly.

If it is uncomfortable, unflattering, impractical, or only works for a narrow portion of the team, they know that too.

And that has consequences.

Not just visually, but culturally.

It shapes how people feel at work. How confidently they represent the brand. How willingly they wear the collection. How much pride they take in their presentation. Whether they feel included in the standard the business is trying to set.

This is why uniforms should never be treated as a simple purchasing decision.

They are a culture decision. A brand decision. A leadership decision.
A good collection says: we have thought about who our people are, what their roles require, how they need to move through their day, and what they need to feel comfortable, confident and well presented while doing it.

A poor one says the opposite.

The best collections do not just ensure the team looks good. They ensure the team feels supported, comfortable and confident day in, day out. That is when the difference becomes visible, not because the garments are flashy, but because the people wearing them feel right in them.

If your current uniform feels like a checkbox exercise rather than a considered part of your business, it may be time to rethink it.

The polo is usually not the problem...

When a uniform collection isn’t working, businesses often blame the garments.

The polo is too hot. The shirt feels dated. The jacket doesn’t suit everyone. The pants are uncomfortable.

And sometimes, yes, the garment is wrong.

But more often, the real problem runs deeper.

The collection was never properly thought through in the first place.

Nobody stopped to ask:
• What do different roles actually need to do in these clothes?
• How does the climate affect wearability day to day?
• Does the range actually suit different body types, or just a select few?
• How will staff move, bend, layer and work in these pieces across the day?
• What happens when new starters come on board down the track?

That’s where uniform programs start to unravel.

Not because one item is terrible. Because the range was never built as a well-planned collection.

And when that happens, staff notice it.

They work around the uniform instead of in it. They tolerate it rather than wear it with confidence. They improvise. They complain. They opt out wherever they can.

That’s not a garment problem. That’s a planning problem.

The businesses that get uniforms right understand that garments are only one piece of the puzzle.

The real work is in the thinking. Understanding the people, the roles, the brand, and building something that actually works in real life, not just on a page in a catalogue.

If your uniform collection isn’t quite landing, there’s a good chance the polo isn’t the real problem.
