That ceiling you’re hitting…

Maybe asking what do I need to do to break through is the wrong question.

Let me know what you think?

I had a really interesting conversation last week with a founder who runs a multi-million-dollar business.

From the outside, her business looks great.

Big revenue. Big clients. Lots happening. But underneath… the margins are tiny.

The bottom line is basically meaningless.

And there’s zero room for anything to go wrong.

80-hour weeks.

Chasing the next shiny thing.

Hoping the big exit will fix everything.

These can all become traps.

And man, did I resonate with this - I have been there!

At one point, I asked her a question that completely stopped her in her tracks:

“What are you using this business to hide from?”

Because here’s what’s wild…

She doesn’t need this business financially.

She barely pays herself.

And she actually wants to move on to other things.

So why stay?

Because even a hard business can feel safe when it protects you from playing bigger.

Because chaos is strangely comfortable.

Because the struggle keeps you busy enough to avoid looking at the real thing underneath.

But she’s impressive as hell, and when I asked that question, something lit up in her eyes.

I think some big changes are coming - and I'm excited to see this.

Why am I sharing this?

Because if you’re still reading, there’s a decent chance you’re hiding behind something too.

A flaw in your model.

A constant problem.

A challenge that keeps you “busy.”

A limitation that feels safe because it keeps you from confronting your actual potential.

If you dropped it… you’d have more opportunity and more risk.

And that’s uncomfortable.

This isn’t strategy or tactics.

This is mindset.

If you’re feeling brave… tell me in the comments:

What might you be hiding behind?

Most founders either don’t measure the right things or measure everything and act on almost nothing.

Recently, my co-founder Troye Wallett and I ran a half-day offsite for our members.

Not strategy fluff.

Determining the actual needles that move the business forward.

But this is actually not so easy.

Too often, we create:

• Dashboards that don’t create traction
• Vanity metrics create false confidence
• Long KPI lists that create noise, not clarity

So, what does work?

The process we use inside The Intentional Leaders Network is called the Bloom Growth™ system - real numbers, real trade-offs, real tension between profit and the customer experience.

This isn’t theory, it’s what we’re actually running week-to-week, and it works!

Here’s the key shift we teach:

• No vanity dashboards
• No 47-item KPI lists
• Just the handful of metrics that genuinely move the needle

I hope you find this useful, and if it sparks any thoughts on your own metrics, I’d love to hear them.

For a long time, my family got my leftovers.

I'd give my best energy to clients, teams, deals, fires, and by the time I got home, Jorja and the kids got whatever scraps were left.

Tired. Impatient. Non-present.

It’s backwards.

We all say we’re “doing it for our families”… but aside from providing financially, where’s the evidence?

Where’s the time?

Where’s the presence? (this one is a real struggle for me)

Where’s the listening?

Where’s the quiet?

Where’s the you that they actually want?

Life gets messy when you’re building a business and a family.

Messy, beautiful, overwhelming, relentless.

I’m still working on this. Every day.

If you’re feeling brave… tell me in the comments:

What’s one thing you’ve started doing (or wish you could do) to give your family your best, not just your leftovers?

A few musings, reflecting on the past year…

1. Setting goals doesn’t differentiate you. That part is easy. Executing on the systems that achieve them does. Focus there.

2. Choosing the right partners in life might be the most important strategic decision there is. Spouses, co-founders, etc. Focus here.

3. Two timeframes really matter: the next hour and the next 10 years. Focus equally on both. (HT James Clear)

4. Upstream from success is a healthy mind and body. Focus there first. The results follow.

5. If you want something to exist that you think is needed and important, don’t wait or ask for it, create it. That’s what The Intentional Leaders Network has been for me, and it’s powerful.

6. Habit and behaviour change stick best when you shift identity. “I must work out” vs “I’m the kind of person who never misses a workout” is a massive difference. Try it.

7. Anxiety is a great servant but a sh*tty master. A little is healthy and drives performance. Too much, and life sucks.

8. Sales and marketing are hard. Not complex. No silver bullets. Just daily, consistent effort and a willingness to trudge through treacle and hear “no” a lot. I’ve become even more cynical that people who can really sell and market don’t sell their time for money, they build their own businesses.

9. Environment matters more than you think. Pay close attention to what you want, and whether your environment makes achieving it easier or harder.

10. Just because it’s serious doesn’t mean it can’t be fun.

Wishing anyone who’s reading this a 2026 filled with adventure, joy, and growth!
