Hobbling prevents, or corrects splayed legs.

Splayed legs occurs for a variety of reasons, from malnutrition in adults, poor footing, to high humidity during incubation.

This baby in the video suffered from high humidity during the latter part of incubation from monsoon season, thus was born a tad on the Heavy side 😅 this meant it had a big belly, which forces the hips out, and, of course, it couldn’t carry its own weight. It only takes a few days—if intervened immediately— to correct, as it excretes fluid-overload from its body, and gains strength with proper musculoskeletal alignment.

One must study Ratite leg anatomy plus be familiar with wound care, to truly grasp proper hobbling and not to incur more detriment.

As you can see the legs are quite thick, and after bandage removal there is indentation. There is a FINE line between tight enough, and TOO tight. This baby had it just right, so that the bandage did not hinder circulation, which leads to clotting or vascular decline.

Certain (untextured) cement is not recommended for them to spend a lot of time on as it can be too hot if in direct sun, become slippery when wet, and doesn’t have enough grip for the very young. These guys are rotated for monitored outdoor extracurricular activities to get sunshine and stimulus, as their textured substrate brooder is indoors.

Had a DIS (dead in shell) yellow pea chick this am, it had bled out from knicking it’s own vessels during its pipping. RIP.
This little one seems to need a bit of assist, so I am CAREFULLY doing so, monitoring every hour, and playing the fine balancing act of ensuring it doesn’t also bleed, off dry out, both detrimental.

**Peafowl and ostrich are some of the most challenging to hatch and rear as babies. High mortality.
But ostriches are bulletproof after a couple of months!
