Blind Boy Brewing's Jacob Viel is (if the name didn't give it away) legally blind - but he's taken what others saw as a barrier to employing him and turned it into a huge strength for his own brewery, with other heightened senses helping him make some cracking b**rs (incl. one of my favourite sours).

Always love helping to get his story out there, as part of client Food Connect Shed's food hub. Thanks Sam, Geoff and Channel 7 for this one.

So this just happened. 3 reasons I wanted you to know:
💰 1 good email can be faster and more effective than weeks of social media*
💰 It's often easier to bring people back into the fold than chasing down new customers.
💰 There's a lot of focus on big numbers and virality in marketing. Don't compare yourself to the Instagram gurus banging on about $10k campaigns when 3 sales you didn't have last week is still a solid result - you're probably doing great.

*As always, not saying ditch social. Just branch out a little and don't put all your eggs in Zuck's basket.

Happy weekend! This has been my 4th year helping CC and the team get word out, but sadly my first not attending (thanks, moon boot).

This festival is full of heart and punches well above it's weight - if you're up for a last minute adventure on your long weekend, it's well worth the trip! Great food, fresh air, old school fair fun. Have a rosella ice cream and serve of CC's spring rolls for me!

I'm not here to tell you not to use AI in your marketing, just that this is one place you shouldn't be doing it!

Lately I've seen a few wonderful local food businesses use AI 'models' in their social media posts. Promoting products, or events or behind the scenes tours. I get it, AI is affordable, fast and can help you get photos of things that don't exist yet. But if you're a community minded local business, you're taking a step back. It looks dishonest (and a little like you don't have customers to take photos of?)

You don't have to spend a fortune - get your customers involved. Take some quick snaps of them with your phone - they'll feel involved, and other people will feel more drawn to them than to some pixels ChatGPT spat out.

Congrats to Blind Boy Brewing who are wrapping up a run of Saturday pop-ups at Food Connect Shed - you can check the last one out today, 2-7pm!

In the lead-up, I've loved giving Jacob a hand in sharing his story with local media and industry mags - 7 pieces of coverage and counting, with a few more interviews to come.

As the name might give away, Jacob is legally blind - but he hasn't let that stop him brewing a mean b**r (as ever I'm partial to a sour, and his lime is 🤌). With most people having misconceptions about what 'blindness' means (only a small percentage of blind people have absolutely no vision), he found it tough to get a go in the field he loved - so he forged his own path, and is smashing stereotypes of what people with disability are capable of in the workplace.

Cost-of-living scaries got you feeling shaky? The good news is, even if people are pulling back in some places, they're still spending on what matters to them - you've just got to find out what that is, and how to be it.

I launched my business just before the 2019 bushfires, and went full time during COVID. I don't think I've ever worked with a client who could be described as 'cheap.' And if there's something I've learned from promoting 'expensive' businesses through strange times, it's that there tend to be 5 buckets people fall into when it comes to what they prioritise in odd times.

TLDR: Do you want my tried-and-tested tips on finding/keeping customers in tricky times? Or is that a bit heavy right now?

I’ve always occupied a weird in-between space. I grew up on a sort-of hobby farm, but was never a ‘farm kid’ or a townie. Since I was 18 I’ve never lived more than 10min from Brisbane’s C*D, but I don’t feel like a city person. I’ve worked in hospo and in ag.

This limbo can feel a bit weird sometimes, but it means I understand my clients’ world while living in their customers’ - I can translate what one needs to say into what the other needs/wants to hear (or buy).

Now, enter this latest global/economic f**kery.

The world-hopping continues, but the gap is feeling a little wider. It’s catastrophe in one ear and ‘she’ll be right’ in the other.

I’m pitching craft b**r and tourism stories to media one minute, writing an email about food system crisis the next. Telling my friends Australia actually produces more food than we eat, but also maybe they should worry more about farmers’ access to diesel than their own fuel bill.

Cost of living issues and disruptions feel inevitable to those of us in the industry, but people outside it seem... not as worried as I expected? So I had all this content planned about how to keep connecting (and selling) when budgets are tight... but worried it sounded a bit fear-mongery.

But then stuff about how to sell tickets to on-farm events felt a little tone deaf 😅 And then what if we get another unhinged tweet (or worse) from the USA that makes everything I said the day before redundant or insensitive?

All this to say - my farm-city-fence-sitting and thinking-through is usually a big strength but admittedly has me a little frozen right now. Hopefully by putting this out there i’ll get a little unstuck, but also, would love to hear what YOU want help with.
