Tarkeeth Forest

Tarkeeth Forest Tarkeeth is Bellingen township's local forest on Gumbaynggirr Country, NSW, Australia.

Tarkeeth State Forest rests on the ridge that separates the Bellinger and Kalang rivers, at the easterly extension of the Great Dividing Range in NSW, Australia. It is South Bellingen’s local public forest which links the valley town of Bellingen and the seaside town of Urunga, providing important habitat for rare and threatened native wildlife. Tarkeeth is a significant Gumbaynggirr cultural site

and includes the Yildaan Dreaming Trade Route.
850-hectares (59%) of this beautiful forest have been designated 'plantation', and are being aggressively clearfelled, burnt, poisoned and densely replanted with Blackbutt monoculture by Forestry Corporation (FCNSW). Trees from Tarkeeth are chipped on the wharf at Port Brisbane and exported to pulp mills in China by Queensland Commodity Exports, a subsidiary of Midway. Forest ‘remains’ are shredded onsite and transported to Broadwater Power Station and burnt for electricity generation. Broadwater is operated by Cape Byron Power and controlled by Quinbrook — a private equity firm that serves foreign investors. Tarkeeth State Forest is adjoined by privately owned forests and Tarkeeth Forest Wildlife Refuge.

A dangerous industrial clearfelling and biomass extraction operation has commenced at on waterlogged acid sulphate soil close to Waterfall Way, adjacent to residences in Sweedmans Lane and the Connels Creek watercourse and wetlands ecosystem, which drains into the Bellinger River east of . This environmentally sensitive forest contains pockets of mixed age Tallowwood and Blue Gum, and is important habitat. Ancient artefacts have been found here. Yet Forestry Corporation classifies this forest as ‘low quality Flooded Gum plantation’ to be rendered into oblivion to supply throw-away pallets, woodchips for , and biomass to burn for fake ‘renewable’ electricity generation!

— Bellingen residents are holding their breath, fearing the helicopter will soon be at their backdoor spraying a toxic herbicide cocktail across 200 hectares of , bordering private properties and public roads in Marx Hill, Fernmount, Brierfield, Tarkeeth and Urunga. These areas were recently subject to clearfelling, burning and biomass extraction for electricity generation. Some family homes are VERY close to the spray zones! KOALAS and other threatened wildlife live here!
Forestry Corporation has secretly resumed aerial spraying, breaking a six year moratorium on the dangerous practice in Bellingen Shire, without any public consultation. The failure to notify or erect warning signs at access roads, resulted in a resident who was jogging in Newry State Forest being caught in the toxic spray-drift.
We call on FCNSW to abandon its plan to resume aerial spraying in suburban , and we call on our elected representatives and Bellingen Shire Council to stand up for residents.
