The untold cost of unsupported loss through empowering communities to Heal from Loss
Loss is an inevitable part of the human experience, yet its profound impacts often go unacknowledged in our society. In my role as Board Chair of Griefline, I've seen firsthand how unsupported grief can silently burden individuals, leading to a cascade of challenges that affect not only personal well-being but also wider societal systems.
Unsupported Grief: Understanding its Impact and Finding Support
Loss is a universal experience, yet society often overlooks the challenges and adjustments required to cope with it. While we typically think of loss in terms of major life events, it's crucial to recognise that even small, daily challenges can contribute to feelings of imbalance and overwhelm.
Unsupported grief, which accompanies loss, often remains unnoticed or unaddressed until it reaches a critical point. It doesn't neatly fit into traditional support systems or clinical programs until it becomes severe, necessitating more resources and causing greater personal trauma to address.
This lack of support extends beyond the individual and their immediate circle, affecting healthcare systems and the economy through increased workplace absenteeism. While Australia offers excellent resources for crisis intervention and overwhelming distress, organisations like Griefline also provide vital early intervention support and information for individuals facing various forms of loss. These losses can range from the death of a loved one or pet to changes in life circumstances, relationship breakdowns, or the inability to work due to injury or illness.
Griefline provides comprehensive support services tailored to help individuals navigate the complexities of grief. Through our free nationwide telephone support, online forums, and self-guided care strategies, we offer invaluable assistance in understanding the emotional rollercoaster and the profound impacts of loss on one's well-being. Additionally, we extend our reach through educational programs designed for workplaces and community organisations.
These programs empower members to effectively support themselves, their peers, their workplace and clients who are experiencing grief, fostering a culture of empathy and understanding.
