The Ever-Popular Berowra Waters Ferry: A Journey Through Time
Did you know that Waranara Ridge is just 2km away from one of Berowra’s most iconic landmarks, the Berowra Waters Ferry?
The story of this ferry is steeped in local history. Jack Smith, a visionary settler in the 1890s, dreamed of transforming Berowra Waters into a bustling tourist destination. Starting with a humble boat house, he provided fishing trips and hired boats for visitors who journeyed down the rugged ‘donkey track’ from Berowra Railway Station.
Smith’s passion for accessibility led to the construction of a road in 1902, opening up Berowra Waters to more visitors. By early 1903, he began operating a punt across the creek, initially for pedestrians and horse-drawn vehicles, eventually accommodating motor cars as well.
Fast forward to today, the Berowra Waters Ferry is a modern marvel, taking just three minutes to cross the river, carrying up to 15 cars at a time. Its history, however, connects us to a rich legacy of vision, persistence, and community.
