📣✨ Celebrating NAIDOC Week | 5–12 July 2026 ✨

This year, we proudly celebrate a remarkable milestone: 50 Years of NAIDOC.

For five decades, NAIDOC Week has honoured the history, cultures and achievements of Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal peoples. It has been a platform to celebrate culture, amplify our voices, recognise the strength of our communities and honour the generations who have shaped the path before us.

This year's theme, 50 Years of Deadly, pays tribute to the Elders, leaders, artists, advocates and communities whose resilience and determination have ensured our stories continue to be told and our cultures continue to thrive. Today we recognise that we haven’t come this far by chance, but because generations of people refused to be silenced.

As we honour the legacy of the past, we also look to the future with pride, knowing the next generations will continue to lead with culture, community and determination at the heart of all they do.

Today, communities across the Torres Strait commemorate Coming of the Light, a day of deep cultural and spiritual significance.

On 1 July 1871, the Reverend Samuel MacFarlane of the London Missionary Society anchored at Erub. Accompanied by South Sea Islander evangelists, he was welcomed by Warrior Elder Dabad. This historic event marked the introduction of Christianity to the Torres Strait.

We celebrate the occasion with sunrise church services, re-enactments of the historic landing, feasting, Ailan dancing and hymns. For us, it’s a time to reflect on our history and celebrate our faith.

Happy Coming of the Light! ✝️💙

Happy Torres Strait Islander Flag Day!
💚💙🖤🤍

Today we celebrate the pride, identity and culture represented through the Torres Strait Islander Flag.

Designed in 1992 by the late Bernard Namok Senior of Thursday Island, the flag was formally acknowledged as a “Flag of Australia” by the Australian Government in 1995.

What do the colours and symbols represent?
💚 Green – the land
💙 Blue – the sea
🖤 Black – Torres Strait Islander people
🤍 White Dhari – peace and culture
⭐ Five-pointed star – the five major island groups and traditional navigation
