How much sleep does my little one need in a 24hr period?

Sleep needs will vary for each child. Some can handle less sleep while others need more at the same age. Our table above is a good reference point and provides you with an average guide.

Your child's total 24hr sleep needs will be spread across naps and night sleep. How this is distributed will vary, child to child. Some may sleep more at night and less during the day, while others will do the reverse.

Sickness, development leaps and simply having a big day out will influence their sleep needs for that particular day.

Support, Reassurance, Love and Comfort πŸ’«

Secure attachment is needed for your little ones wellbeing and development.

Helping your baby learn to settle a new way does not mean you need to leave them for an extended period of time. Its important to always respond to your baby if they are upset to reassure and comfort them.

Every baby has different needs and temperaments.

Every family has a different parenting style and limit. You know your child best ~ Work within your comfort zone and remember its normal for your baby to need you! ✨

All About False Starts πŸ’€

Are your struggling with a false start at bedtime?. These wake-up’s can be frustrating and a little difficult to decode why they are occurring.

It can take some trial and error to work out exactly why your little one is waking up shortly after falling asleep and treating bedtime like a nap.

Let’s go through the main reasons why they occur:

✨ Sleep pressure - Too much or too little can result in a false start.

✨ Sleep Association - Is your baby waking and searching for a sleep prop they fell asleep with?.

✨ Discomfort - They could be waking out of discomfort. This is especially common in young babies if they haven’t been burped after their night feed.

✨ Sleep Environment - Is any light creeping in? Check for any external noises that are bothering them.

βœ… Review your little ones day routine. It may need some adjusting. Check out our Little Ones Sleep Guide. Providing you with everything you need to get your baby’s sleep back on track.

Cot Standing ~ It’s a frustrating phase!

Your little one can now stand up and is using every opportunity to show off their new skill.

It’s a tricky stage but another normal part of your child’s development. It may test your patience but they won’t be cot standing forever, I promise.

So what do you do when your little jack in the box insists on standing instead of sleeping?

πŸ‘‰πŸ» Firstly, make sure their cot is now on the lowest level for safety reasons.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» Give them lots of opportunity to practise going from standing to laying down and back again.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» If they don’t lay down after a period of time - enter the room, lay them down & say your sleep time phrase. Return and repeat in 5-10 min intervals.

It is tedious and frustrating returning to their room constantly but by sending the same consistent message every time you lay them back is really important. They will soon become bored of it and this phase will pass.
