Safe Underground Mining

Safe Underground Mining You need safer work places where employees participate, believe in and understand the mine site’s safety procedures? safeUGmining can help you with that

Are your managers and supervisors too busy to also work on the improvement of your Workplace Health and Safety Management System? safeUGmining updates Workplace Health and Safety Management Systems for all underground mines, high-wall operations and tunnelling. We have the experience, competencies and skills required to work with your representatives and line supervisors to perform a meaningful ri

sk assessment. Are your Safety Advisor and Health/Safety Manager too occupied with current workload and administrative requirements? safeUGmining can help you by doing various tasks. We do the facilitation of bow-tie, broad-brush, and risk assessments to make sure that your managers and safety advisors are free for full participation. Does the same incidents happen over and over, and your company does not get to the root cause of it? safeUGmining is the best when it comes to dealing with such matters. We do effective audit reports of existing Workplace Health and Safety Management Systems. We have experience to do Workplace Compliance Audits. We do incident site inspections, incident investigations and reporting. Are the site procedures not providing full cover of all statutory and corporate policy requirements? safeUGmining has working experience in statutory appointments. We will work with your crew members, line supervisors and managers to develop simple procedures. We will also ensure documents cover all corporate and statutory requirements. Are your mine workers skilled and qualified, yet they do not understand your site procedures? safeUGmining does linguistic and readability reviews of hazard management plans, and other publications to ensure all procedures are easily understood. We also test them with your mine workers before we recommend implementation. Custom-made training for equipment operators, supervisors, trades and managers are done to enable underground mine workers to conduct their own risk assessments and develop safe work procedures. Do you have a good Workplace Health and Safety Management System but it is outdated? safeUGmining does high quality technical reviews and updates of hazard management plans, site standards and standard operating procedures. We will also recommend a document management system that will suit your operating and reporting arrangements.

Tracking and analysing underground vehicle movement

safeUGmining can relate to this event from a day in the office: "You're driving a large vehicle down a steep, single-lane, pitch-black tunnel. Visibility through the wet, grimy windows is nearly nonexistent. Communication on the two-way radio is garbled. Then, around the corner — a flicker of lights. There's no accessible turn-off, no time to back up. And a 50-ton truck is heading straight toward you." We love the solution even more as it increased productivity at the same time. http://www.csc.com/au/success_stories/97765-underground_traffic_system_improves_mine_safety

Safety in Australia's Cannington Mine is greatly improved with an underground traffic management system using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology.

Risk assessment for underground mine projects

safeUGmining facilitates risk assessments and development of Project Risk Management Systems for underground mining operations. We meet with company representatives to do a risk assessment of the strategic project plan for proposed underground mine developments. This strategic review of development projects has the purpose to:
1. Identify and understand the risks to the strategy that can affect business outcomes
2. Assess relative priority of the risks
3. Develop a risk register that would assist decision making and in implementing the strategic project plan.

Inertisation Of Highwall Mining

safeUGmining facilitates risk assessments and development of Workplace Health and Safety Management Systems for Highwall mining operations.

Highwall mining is used to extract additional underground coal via surface mining operations after reaching the economic limit of opencut operations. The production rates and pe*******on depths of highwall mining equipment has been restricted for mines with high methane concentrations in comparison to regions with lower methane concentrations.

A number of inert gases have been identified to inertise the highwall drive, including Carbon Dioxide, Nitrogen and Boiler Gas, which is a combination of carbon dioxide, oxygen and nitrogen. A research paper published by the University of Southern Queensland and CSIRO described which of these gases is the most effective in improving the mine’s efficiency with regard to safety and production rates at a chosen pe*******on depth of 300m. Results indicate that applying the inert gases at high angles is more effective in minimising the methane/oxygen concentrations within the drive than at lower angles. Carbon Dioxide was the most effective when applied at a 60 degree angle, followed closely by Nitrogen, while Boiler Gas came last.

Guidelines for good occupational health and safety practice in tunnel construction

The International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) gathers 73 member nations. They have published Guidelines for Good Occupational Health and Safety Practice in Tunnel Construction which safeUGmining uses as guidance for Tunnelling Health and Safety System guidance.

Not all countries have a comprehensive framework of regulations and guidance to ensure that underground construction work is conducted in a safe and healthy manner. In those which do, the regulations normally lay down as broad principles the measures that are to be adopted, but detailed guidance may be left to national standards or industry publications. These guidelines are not intended to replace existing national regulations or guidance but to provide guidance on basic good practice where none exists.
