There’s a side of high-paying FIFO work that isn’t talked about enough.

Dr Philip Armstrong calls it the “golden handcuffs.”

Psychosocial risk in remote work rarely affects just one person.

When a worker is struggling, the operational impact can quickly spread to the people around them through increased workload, fatigue, disrupted rosters, pressure on supervisors and reduced staffing.... particularly when a replacement can’t simply be called in from down the road.

EAPs, policies and support services all have an important role but they are only part of the picture.

Remote operations also need leaders and workers who understand how psychosocial risk can show up in practice, how to respond when concerns emerge, and how quickly one situation can begin affecting the wider team.

After: a supervisor notices early warning signs in the second week of a new rotation. The concern is escalated through a process. Support is offered early. The issue is managed before it becomes an incident.
