The Women of Little Lon is a fascinating look at the lives of s*x workers in nineteenth-century Melbourne.
Little Lon was Melbourne’s main s*x-work district in the 1880s, and was conveniently situated in the heart of the city. It was also regarded as a ‘slum’.
Slums, along with being places of deprivation and disease, were considered to be breeding grounds for immorality and vice. In reality, they were usually working class, multicultural areas that also happened to house brothels and gambling dens.
Barbara Minchinton brings these women (around 100 are mentioned in the book) out of the shadows and myths surrounding s*x work during this period with fascinating case studies and life histories. What’s also interesting is her use of family history techniques and resources, particularly online records.
For many women, s*x work was a legitimate way of making a living, as domestic and factory work was poorly paid. The s*x industry also gave women financial independence, as many women owned these businesses.
If you’re interested in the history of women in nineteenth-century colonial Australia, I highly recommend this book.
