MICROPHONE CUPPING... I thought I would share this with you all or anyone who has to deal with an artist mic cupping.
The Screaming Jets frontman Dave Gleeson gets his hands right up on the capsule and it has always been a game of EQ cat & mouse as his hands constantly slightly change position.
However, for the last year I have had Dave on the new Sennheiser EWDX wireless system and after talking to a few colleagues (thank you Anatole Day) I tried the new-ish Sennheiser MD445 capsule. Well to say that I am truly blown away is an understatement. I am constantly impressed with how this mic remains unchanged when cupping it. I walk up to monitors at every sound check to listen to Dave's mons and I cup and uncup the mic while talking into it and the tone remains full bodied with no nasal push when when cupped. Truly incredible.
If anyone has issues with artists who constantly cup the mic, I can honestly say that you should give the MD445 a go.
Full disclosure, Sennheiser has not endorsed the Screaming Jets or myself to write this and we paid regular pricing for our wireless units. This is purely a review to hopefully assist anyone who deals with this regularly.
Below is a punters iphone video of The Jets performing last weekend and you can see Dave cupping right up on the mic and the vocal is still very full. I have almost flat EQ on his vocal with only a little touch up to counter proximity effect.
ENJOY!
