I would like to take this opportunity to wish all my client friends a very merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year.

Sitting there listening to the gentle purr (or solid roar) of the generator in your off grid home. Would you prefer to hear the pitta patter of the rain on the roof. Maybe it is time to think about a solar power upgrade. A modern well designed system will only need backup in the most extreme dull conditions. It will typically go for 3 days without sun.
So if you are finding you older system is just not coping like it used too or you just moved to your dream off grid property and have just found out you don't have an endless stream of free power.
Give me a shout for a free no obligation appraisal. Including advice on energy management and conservation. Or just a health check on your system.

Ok so it is time for a bit of knowledge sharing.
I specialise in off grid systems. But what does that mean?
There are essentially 4 types of solar power systems
1. On grid
2. On grid with battery backup.
3. Semi off grid with grid backup
4. Fully off grid with battery and generator backup.

1. An on grid system is what you see on the majority of homes in the suburbs. It takes the power from the panels and feeds it to the house and any excess goes to the grid. You can get paid for this power but it is not a lot and the power you take from the grid will cost you a lot more than you get paid. When you have a blackout you still loose power even if the sun is shining. The trick with getting the best out of this is to use the power during the day. For example set timers so you run the dishwasher and washing machine during the day.

2. On grid with battery backup is much the same except that at night and when you get a blackout the battery takes over. Many places are going to time of day charging where the price of power varies though the day depending on demand. Using the battery allows you to only use power when it is cheap and even to export power when it is expensive. How the battery power is managed can be set up in many ways. In relative terms the battery is still small compared to most off grid systems.
Another variant of this is the virtual battery where the battery is somewhere else on the grid.It is very large but is connected via the gris to many homes. That is it is a shared battery. In use it works much like having you own battery except when there is a blackout.

3. This is essentially the same as an off grid system except the generator is replaced by the grid. No power is fed to the grid. Not common in Australia but useful in a place that has a very unreliable grid. Or if you want to minimise your carbon footprint. The grid is a much cleaner source of power than a noisy inefficient small generator.

4. Off grid systems are the most complex. The power is stored in a battery that is much larger than the grid system. This is because the battery is generally designed to power the home for 3 to 5 days. This is referred to as Autonomy. The system also has to be able to charge the battery from the panels and maintain the correct charging pattens. It also needs to be able to take the generator input and both power the home and charge the batteries from the system.
The system designer will need to take into account both the home and the people who live there when specifying the various parts of the system. As I live off grid I am very familiar with these designed requirements. In a well designed and managed system the generator is rarely used. I have really not needed mine all this year though I have started it a few times to keep it in running order.
