Learning something completely new can be daunting, especially when you first open a program like Adobe InDesign.

Last week, Antonia completed ATI-Mirage’s two-day Adobe InDesign course, starting as a complete beginner and coming away with a strong practical foundation in the software.

The course covered the fundamentals of working with layouts, text, imagery, styles and document formatting, with plenty of opportunity to put the learning into practice along the way.

Those new skills will have a direct and practical benefit for our team: as Antonia continues to build her confidence with InDesign, she’ll be able to support updates to our capability statements, tailor marketing materials for different service streams, and help us manage more of our brand and communications work in-house.

At RFF, we’re committed to supporting professional development that helps our people grow while also building stronger capability across the business.

A big thank you to Ali at ATI-Mirage for tailoring the sessions to the different experience levels in the room and taking the time to work through questions as they came up.

A great couple of days of learning for Antonia, and a valuable addition to RFF’s growing in-house marketing capability.

A new practical guide is now available to help Aboriginal organisations navigate land tenure in Western Australia, and RFF was pleased to assist the Department of
Primary Industries and Regional Development in preparing it.

Setting up for Success: Land Tenure provides practical guidance on:
• defining community goals and preferred land uses
• completing feasibility, due diligence and business planning
• engaging with interest holders and government agencies
• navigating State approvals, native title and ILUA requirements
• selecting an appropriate tenure option

The guide also includes practical examples from Wilinggin Aboriginal Corporation and Nyamba Buru Yawuru.

If your organisation is considering a land project, applying for tenure or reviewing whether its current tenure is suitable, speak with RFF about how we can assist with planning, due diligence, approvals and engagement.

Tom visited Onslow on Thalanyji Country last week to check in on several projects for RFF clients.

Onslow is a small but strong community with a remarkably diverse economy.

It supports the iron ore sector through Onslow Iron project, and the oil and gas industry through Woodside Energy’s Macedon project and Chevron's Wheatstone project.

It is also developing a growing decommissioning sector, supported by the of Ashburton’s Pilbara Regional Waste Management Facility and .

Then there is the strong tourism industry, which draws on the region’s beautiful landscapes and sea country through businesses such as Mackerel Islands.

And, of course, who could forget Onslow Salt?

Onslow is something of a sleeper when we talk about the enormous value the Pilbara contributes to the State and national economy. It is a small community supporting an extraordinary concentration of nationally significant industries.

We are always grateful for the opportunity to spend time on the ground in the communities where our clients operate; and next time, planning the trip along side the weekend to make the most of it with a bit of fishing will be a key KPI for Tom!

Tom and Owen had a great day at Rio Tinto’s Pilbara Buy Local Expo, catching up with clients, suppliers and businesses from across the region.

Bringing so many local businesses together in one place creates space for the B2B conversations that can be difficult to fit into the working week. It was a valuable opportunity to compare notes, share ideas and talk openly about the opportunities and challenges facing businesses operating in the Pilbara.

Events like this also give local suppliers the chance to pitch directly to the big end of town. We appreciated the conversations with Rio Tinto’s procurement team and look forward to continuing discussions about how RFF can support Rio Tinto’s growth and operations across the Pilbara.

We are also neighbours with the Buy Local and Communities team, located on the ground floor of The Quarter in Karratha. Well done to Navah Holtzman and the team for bringing the event together.

For any procurement team members we missed, feel free to pop in when you are next visiting the local team, grab one of our epic fishing shirts off the rack and learn a little more about what we do.

Throughout July, RFF had the pleasure of facilitating site visits to Yindjibarndi Energy Corporation's Jinbi project for representatives from DPLH, The Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia - CMEWA, DEED, , Pilbara Development Commission, and Kevin Michel MLA .

The weather at this time of year is hard to beat in the Pilbara. After strong wet-season rainfall, the nearby Jinbi, meaning freshwater spring or waterhole, is still flowing near the project development footprint and provides an ideal spot perfect place for a chat and a photo over lunch.

These visits are so valuable, and we appreciate the time set aside by those to attend. They give government, industry and project teams time on Country to engage directly with stakeholders who will be crucial to delivering the Pilbara Energy Transition, and to better understand the opportunities and challenges facing proponents.

We also always value time on the ground with the Yindjibarndi team, who are moving at a rate of knots to deliver the Jinbi project and provide new renewable energy to support Rio Tinto’s Pilbara operations.

RFF has been part of this journey since the formation of Yindjibarndi Energy Corporation, and before that through the establishment of the Yindjibarndi People’s energy vehicle, Yiyangu.

Our work has included supporting land access and assembly, government approvals and the management of key stakeholder relationships.

It has been a privilege to help the project reach this point, and we look forward to supporting many more YEC projects through to financial close and delivery in the years ahead.

Getting out on site is one of the most valuable parts of our job.

A recent trip to Port Hedland provided the opportunity to meet with the Qube team and walk through several current and future projects across their Pilbara operations.

Seeing how a site functions day-to-day provides insights that simply can't be gained from plans or aerial imagery. Those conversations help us provide advice that's grounded in operational reality and supports practical outcomes.

We're grateful to work with clients who value collaboration and long-term thinking. Thanks to the team for another productive visit.

Managing Aboriginal heritage risk for public infrastructure works requires a clear understanding of land tenure, native title, statutory responsibilities, cultural heritage values and the nature of the proposed activity.

For local governments, these issues can arise across a wide range of works, including roads, drainage, public open space, community infrastructure, asset renewal and routine maintenance.

RFF Australia provides specialist advisory support to help local governments assess and manage these risks in a practical and consistent way.

Our services include:

• townsite and public infrastructure heritage risk assessments
• review of land tenure and management responsibilities
• assessment of proposed works against existing land condition and disturbance levels
• identification of relevant Native Title Parties and engagement requirements
• advice on heritage surveys, cultural monitoring and statutory approval pathways
• preparation of internal due diligence procedures, risk matrices and assessment tools
• unexpected heritage finds procedures
• staff education, workshops and practical guidance for project managers and operational teams

This work helps local governments establish clear internal processes, identify when further assessment or engagement is required, document key decisions and integrate heritage considerations into normal project planning and delivery.

By combining expertise in Aboriginal heritage, native title, land tenure, town planning, GIS and project delivery, RFF helps local governments build practical and defensible heritage management systems.

As a WALGA Preferred Supplier, RFF is well positioned to support local governments across Western Australia with specialist heritage risk assessment, management procedures and staff education.

Simon Davis and Charlotte Slaughter recently had the opportunity to spend time in the Pilbara, listening, learning and deepening their understanding of the cultural, environmental and community context that shapes work across the region.

These conversations continue to inform the way RFF approaches regional projects, particularly where land, tenure, access, culture and future development need to be considered together.

We are excited to continue integrating our GIS capability with tenure, land access and regional project knowledge to help empower our clients when planning for the future.

This week marks one year since Ren joined RFF as a Development Manager.

In that time, Ren has made a huge contribution across the business, bringing energy, commercial focus and a very practical understanding of what it takes to move complex projects forward.

He has also been kicking some serious goals recently, including making strong progress on regional social and affordable housing initiatives across the Pilbara and Kimberley.

Ren’s presence in the office is hard to miss, usually because he is cracking jokes, keeping everyone on their toes, or bringing a bit of humour to a busy week.

He has quickly become a valued part of the RFF team, and we’re excited to see what the next year brings.

Congratulations on your first year, Ren.

Owen Hightower and Tom attended the Pilbara Summit in Karratha last week, joining clients, industry, government and regional stakeholders for two days of discussion on the future of the Pilbara.

It is always valuable to have a broad mix of people visit the region, share ideas and explore practical solutions to the material challenges facing regional development, economic diversification and new industry in the Pilbara.

This year, however, there was also a clear and emerging sense of frustration in the room.

Many of the people attending have been part of these conversations for several years now. While there has been progress, the pace of delivery remains a concern, particularly in relation to the Pilbara Energy Transition Plan and the infrastructure required to support the establishment of new Strategic Industrial Areas.

A strong theme from the Summit was the need for greater collaboration between new industry proponents. There is a real opportunity for industry to work together more deliberately and help direct government toward the right interventions, priorities and enabling infrastructure.

As we move into the new financial year, we expect another year of incremental progress. Hopefully, by the Pilbara Summit 2027, we will also be reflecting on major announcements that signal material progress in the energy transition and the establishment of new industry across the Pilbara’s Strategic Industrial Areas.

For RFF, these are not abstract policy discussions. They go directly to the work we do across regional Western Australia, supporting land access, planning, approvals, stakeholder engagement and project delivery in complex regional environments.

Thank you to everyone involved in the Summit and to those continuing to push for practical, coordinated and regionally grounded outcomes for the Pilbara.
