It’s exciting to see so much support for a startup that is actively supporting ecological restoration via removing long spined sea urchins and wakame and converting them into value added products for skincare and hair care.

This initiative is a wonderful example of finding creative ways to create holistic value that benefits both people and the planet, whilst also creating meaningful jobs in the process.

They have the licenses, they have the logistical network, as well as a proprietary process of freeze dried extraction that provides 10x the amino acid profile vs. standard extraction methods.

Everything in place to bring this vision to life, and the ROPA team is inviting you to come on the journey with them.

Breaking News: no one nails their pitch on the first go.

The Reality?

They stumble.
They forget their lines.
They laugh.
They reset.
They go again.

This reel? It’s the bits you don’t normally see on socials.
What are we trying to convey?

Well, I guess that building something meaningful isn’t polished. It’s iterative.

You practice.
You miss.
You reorient.
You refine.
You grow.

That’s the work.

This reel is the stuff that never makes the keynote – the fluffed lines, the awkward pauses, the ‘why did I say it like that?’ face… and then going again.

And the real magic? Doing it inside a community of practice. A space where you’re held, challenged, encouraged, and surrounded by others, translating big ideas into real-world impact.

Social media loves the highlight reel, forgetting that most of the work is in the rehearsal.

We’re actively co-designing more ways to support impact founders (even those who don’t need a lab bench) – with space to meet, practical frameworks, and systems-aware thinking baked in. So if there’s any style of event, workshop, course, or anything in between that you’d like us to run. Let me know.

We’re all a work in progress. That’s not a weakness, that’s the point.

We’re delighted to welcome Jaryd Diamond and .info to CoLabs Australia as an Impact Member, bringing their incredible co-working and co-learning community to Melbourne! 🌏✨

Socratica, a non-profit educational charity from Waterloo, Canada, has grown into a global maker collective, now in 30+ cities – and Melbourne is next! Their local chapter, Laneway Commons, will be hosting weekly co-working sessions where creators, makers, and thinkers can come together to work on their passion projects.

🎨 Whether you’re coding a generative art piece, writing a psychological horror short, producing an ambient synth album, designing a board game, or diving into ML research. Laneway Commons is your space to create, connect, and rediscover what inspires you.

Meet Jaryd Diamond 👋

Jaryd is a 4th-year CS student on exchange at Monash from the University of Waterloo and has been deeply involved in the Socratica community. Through past sessions, he’s built a dating algorithm (that led to two relationships!), directed a short film, organised Mario Kart tournaments with live band accompaniment, and more! 🎶🎮

At CoLabs, we believe in cultivating impact-driven communities, and Laneway Commons is a perfect addition to our ecosystem. We can’t wait to see the ideas, collaborations, and innovations that emerge from these sessions!

In their short stay with us, they've already helped build a 'puppy pit', install satellite dishes for backup internet connections, helped create systems to support future interns and are now reminding us of how useful 3D printers are in the lab.

🔧 Building Resilience: Challenge 4 – Self-Healing Materials

For Part 4 in this series, two teams from the Monash Innovation Guarantee took on the fascinating world of self-healing materials, exploring how synthetic biology and biomimicry could transform infrastructure for a more sustainable future.

💡 Team 1: Osteomatrix
Inspired by how bones heal, this team developed a concept for self-healing pipes. Using bacteria housed in porous ceramic casings around concrete pipes, wrapped in a protective coating, their system could repair cracks caused by extreme weather, significantly extending pipe lifespans. This innovation addresses real-world challenges in infrastructure resilience, especially in regions prone to harsh conditions.

🚧 Team 2: NeuRoads
This team focused on self-healing roads, combining short-term solutions with visionary thinking. In the near term (H2 innovation), they explored using heat and rolling techniques to repair conventional asphalt, extending road lifespans. Looking further ahead (H3 innovation), they proposed using bio-binders, sunflower oil microcapsules, and advanced techniques to create roads that regenerate themselves – and maybe even charge electric cars as they drive! 🌻🚙

Both projects showcased the power of bio-led innovation to rethink and redesign critical infrastructure, combining immediate impact with future possibilities. At CoLabs, we’re excited to see how ideas like these could transform how we build and maintain systems for people and the planet.

⚡️ Reimagining Waste: Circular Economy Meets Clean Tech

For Challenge 3: Circular Economy and Waste Transformation, one student team took on the ambitious task of turning human and organic waste into a valuable energy resource. Enter microbial fuel cells (MFCs): essentially batteries that process greywater, sewage, and organic scraps to generate power.

Here’s how it works: the system uses anaerobic digesters and exoelectrogenic microbes on an anode to oxidise organic waste, producing excess electrons. These electrons flow to a cathode, creating usable energy. Their concept proposed embedding these microbial batteries inside modular brick walls – initially as part of a building’s infrastructure, and they later pivoted to prototype them for façade installations. They even explored upcycling unwanted bricks for this innovative system, merging material reuse with energy generation. 🔋🌱

What’s particularly exciting is their claim that the energy produced could exceed most household needs – an impressive leap for waste transformation! Plus, this aligns with conversations Sam and Andrew were having just weeks ago about the untapped potential of nutrients we currently flush away with drinking water. 💧

This project stood out for its system of innovations – combining cleantech, regenerative material use, and modularity. It’s a fantastic example of bio-led innovation addressing energy, waste, and resource efficiency in one elegant solution.

At CoLabs, we think microbial fuel cells are an area well worth further exploration, especially as we seek circular solutions for waste transformation. What do you think about harvesting energy from waste? Let us know below!
