Watching the Tyson vs. Paul fight really hit home for me: marketing—whether this is a good or bad thing—can completely hide an average product.
I’m no boxing expert, but I know enough to see that Jake Paul isn’t the greatest boxer, and that a 58-year-old man struggling to stay on his feet throughout the fight isn’t exactly a world-class product.
But what we witnessed wasn’t just a fight—it was a marketing and sales masterclass!
A sellout crowd of over 70,000, an estimated 60 million people streaming it worldwide, massive sponsorship deals, and more. All eyes were on it.
Yet we had a YouTube-famous 27-year-old in his physical prime fighting a 58-year-old man at least two decades past his. The fight itself was poor—even to an amateur viewer—but the whole world was captivated.
This is a great reminder in business: it doesn’t matter how good you are at what you do—if you can’t market yourself and sell, it simply doesn’t matter.
Unfortunately, some of the best people out there—the ones with real talent and gifts to share—are struggling to get noticed.
Meanwhile, others with average products or services are making a fortune, especially online.
I don’t love that this is how it works, but it’s the reality.
In an ideal world, you build an incredible product or service, and then master the vital skills of marketing and sales.
That’s the combination that wins!
