I am an Exercise Physiologist and Personal Trainer that works at Barbell Samurai, a performance and rehab based gym that I opened with another trainer at the start of 2017. My qualifications include Certificate III and IV in Fitness, a Bachelor in Exercise Science and Human Movement and a Masters in Clinical Exercise and Rehabilitation. involve multiple joints thereby getting the body to work as a whole, improving the full kinetic chain to get the body as strong as it can be. My passion for fitness is derived from my sporting background and improving performance of both athletes in their sporting endeavors, and non-athletes to improve their general health.

Doesn't it make you feel warm and fuzzy?

Things your PT should NOT say...

1. Feel the burn.

2. Make sure you drink your protein shake immediately after your workout.

3. If you're not sore, you didn't work hard enough.

4. Eating small meals will stoke your metabolic fire.

5. Don't eat gluten, you'll bloat.

6. You need to do your cardio fasted to burn fat.

7. Detoxing is necessary to rid your body of toxins prior to your diet.

8. Take this fat burner, it will boost your metabolism.

9. Cut out carbohydrates, insulin spikes are what causes weight gain.

10. Let's burn 'X' amount of calories in today's session!

If your trainer is telling you to do any of the above, you should question your investment!

Something I have been talking about for years

Jump training needs to improve COM displacement, not hip mobility, a higher box doesn't mean you're jumping higher!

It’s fashionable to be a personal trainer, own a gym or to have an online following who double tap your bathroom selfie as you flex on a Friday… Plus, it’s profitable if you have a six-pack, cash to splash around or a large online following. The fitness industry is unfit, in dire need of reform and…

Many of you may know, or have yourself been, someone who's had trouble losing weight after weeks or even months of trying. Then someone recommends to cut out fruit/bread/pasta/whatever, and all of a sudden the weight comes off. It must have been fruit/bread/pasta/whatever that was preventing the weight loss.

Another similar story is during a solar eclipse, if you beat on drums and chant loudly to the gods, the sun will reappear. The drumming and chanting must be what brings the sun back.

It may make sense, but coming to each of the conclusions above is guilty of committing what is called 'the post hoc fallacy' (after this therefore because of this), a kind of 'false cause' reasoning.

Just because one event happens before another does not mean there's meaningful (causal) relationship between first event and the second event – the first event did not necessarily cause the next event.

The loud chanting and drumming may have caused the sun to reappear during an eclipse. But it could also be to do with the orbits of the Earth and moon.

Cutting out fruit/bread/pasta/etc may be the reason for your stubborn weight finally coming off. That, or omitting any of them ma have put you in a caloric deficit thus causing the weight loss.

The sequences of events does not imply causality.

The term 'natural' is defined as anything that exists, or is formed by nature.

This definition is NOT bu****it.

Use of 'natural' as a health buzzword, however, is BU****IT.

FUN FACT
The 'amanita phalloides' is part of the Amanita genus of mushrooms.

Being a mushroom, it occurs naturally in nature.

The A. phalloides happens to also be known as the "death cap"; one of the most poisonous mushrooms that exists.

Labelling something with the 'natural' tag does not automatically mean it's better or healthier.

A less extreme example are the many 'natural' foods, such as fruit and nut bars, that *are* made with natural ingredients, but can still often be packed with calories despite their small portions.

Over-consumption of calories is not healthy.

Especially when you've been tricked into thinking what you were doing all along was good for you because it was 'natural'.

Article By: Jay Ellis As far as training outcomes go, almost any s&c coach or athlete you are likely to come across would note “power” as their desired outcome from their programs. Maybe not as...

Eating nutritiously IS healthy.

Letting what you eat dictate how you feel about or think of yourself IS NOT healthy.

Salads don't turn you into the epitome of all that is good in this world, just like how eating cake doesn't magically turn you into some worthless human being.

Food is just food.

Our will to work out may be influenced by a mother’s exercise habits during pregnancy, and begin as early as in the womb, according to findings from a study in mice.
