It’s a question that got business owners talking at a recent Owner’s Table hosted by Emma Lovett, owner of The Alternative Board Brisbane South West, and Tim Eckenfels, partner of The Alternative Board Brisbane South.
Most owners could name that person immediately.
The harder question was: why are they still with you , and what are you doing to keep them?
The conversation highlighted that keeping great people isn’t always about money. Often, it’s about trust, flexibility, meaningful work, feeling valued and being able to see a future in the business.
For an SME, losing one key person can have a huge ripple effect. Years of knowledge, customer relationships and experience can walk out the door with them , and suddenly, the business owner is picking up the pieces.
The good news? Small businesses can offer something bigger organisations often struggle to match: genuine trust, flexibility and the opportunity to make a real difference.

Recently, Andrew Campbell, owner of The Alternative Board Perth South Coast, brought a group of local business owners together for a sample board, giving them the chance to experience what happens around a peer advisory board table.

Sometimes, a business can look successful from the outside while feeling very different from the inside.
The revenue is coming in. Customers are happy. The team is busy. By all the usual measures, things are going well.
But somewhere along the way, you might find yourself wondering: Is this still the business I wanted to build?
Mary Stevenson, owner of The Alternative Board Townsville, sees this with business owners more often than you might think:
“Many business owners I meet look successful on the outside — steady revenue, happy clients and everything running smoothly. But behind the scenes, they tell me the spark has gone. The business feels more like a job than a passion. And sometimes, growth has come at the cost of their freedom, health or happiness.
