AIAA Sydney Section The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) is the world’s largest aerospace technical society. Welcome to the AIAA Sydney Section!

Sydney Section, one of three sections in Australia, serves memebers from NSW and ACT. In February 1998, the Sydney Section, Australia, was chartered as the first AIAA Section outside of the USA. The Section encompasses all AIAA members in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, and the Section Council is currently based in Canberra, ACT. AIAA has earned an international reputation as the preeminent publisher of cutting-edge aerospace books and journals, and the leading source of aerospace industry archives, dating back to the early 1900s. Over the past eight decades, AIAA and its predecessor organizations have published over 300 books and almost 200,000 technical articles. AIAA’s current publications include seven technical journals, a magazine, three book series, national and international standards documents, a growing number of e-books and other electronic products, and a full-service, interactive Web site. For the most authoritative technical publications, look to AIAA. AIAA organizes and hosts the aerospace industry’s most important conferences and events, where aerospace professionals exchange information, present findings, network, and collaborate. Every year, AIAA organizes and hosts some two dozen conferences on key aerospace topics. Whether it’s science and engineering, exploration, navigation, communication, or environmental applications, AIAA brings the aerospace community together to bring the world together.|

By addressing the needs of scientists, engineers and allied professionals who conceive, design, develop, test, construct, and operate air and space vehicles, plus their associated systems and subsystems. Equally important, we reach out to the educators who train the professionals, to the researchers who continuously renew the technology, to the managers who lead their efforts, and to the innovators who generate and nurture new concepts. For all of these professionals, AIAA offers a wealth of benefits. These include resources for practitioners, such as access to market and management information, links to related societies and businesses, career information, and provocative articles with relevant industry insights. AIAA is the voice of the aerospace profession, giving its members an effective say in policy decisions affecting aerospace. Since 1972 AIAA has contributed technical expertise to Congress and the executive branch, providing accurate information to decision makers and highlighting the crucial role aerospace plays in economic and national security, and in our technological future.

Calling aerospace experts across the Indo-Pacific: get involved with AIAA’s Technical Committees.

From 1 September to 15 October, applications are open to join one of AIAA’s Technical Committees - and we'd love to see much stronger representation from across our region.

AIAA’s Technical Committees bring together experts from around the world across disciplines ranging from astrodynamics, propulsion, and aerodynamics to space health, robotics, small satellites, structures, systems engineering, AI, and much more.

These committees sit at the heart of AIAA’s technical community, helping shape conferences, publications, awards, student competitions, and the exchange of knowledge across the global aerospace sector.

The Indo-Pacific is home to extraordinary aerospace expertise, and we need more of that expertise represented in these global technical conversations.

If you’re an engineer, researcher, academic, or technical expert from Australia, New Zealand or across the wider Indo-Pacific, we strongly encourage you to explore the committees and apply.

Viasat: Space for Good Australia 2026, a national student innovation challenge inviting university and TAFE students to explore how space technology can improve life on Earth.

Led in Australia by Viasat, the challenge will allow students to develop ideas across areas such as sustainability, disaster response, connectivity, space cybersecurity, resilient space capabilities, AI and data infrastructure, and more.

𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲?

University and TAFE students across Australia, including undergraduate, graduate and doctoral-level students. Students from all disciplines are encouraged to apply. Finalists will have the opportunity to receive
mentorship, travel to Sydney for the finals, and compete for prizes of:

1st place: $20,000 AUD
2nd place: $15,000 AUD
3rd place: $10,000 AUD

Dear Members,

We are pleased to share an invitation to a fascinating presentation by Dr Glenn Horrocks, who, in collaboration with NSW SES Bush Search and Rescue (BSAR), is reprising his highly successful talk, ‘Search for the VHMDX’, this Saturday at the HARS Aviation Museum at Albion Park.

The presentation explores the enduring mystery of VH-MDX, a Cessna aircraft that disappeared over the Barrington Tops in 1981 and has never been located. More than four decades later, the disappearance still remains an unsolved mystery.

Glenn’s presentation brings together aviation history, search operations and the unanswered questions surrounding the disappearance, making this a great event for anyone with an interest in aviation, search and rescue, history or simply to hear about Australian aviation mystery.

The presentation is ticketed, as it forms part of HARS Aviation Museum’s monthly Tarmac Days, with the event also supporting the Museum’s ongoing work to preserve and maintain its historic aircraft and collection.

Can we see farther, clearer, and smarter through Earth’s turbulent atmosphere? 🚀🔭

Detecting exoplanets and other distant objects requires precise control of incoming light. But atmospheric turbulence distorts optical signals, blurring images and limiting the performance of even the most advanced optical systems.

That’s where astrophotonics comes in. 🌠

Join the AIAA Sydney Section for a special guest lecture by Dr Barnaby Norris on Detecting Exoplanets and Beyond Using Astrophotonics, where he will explore how compact photonic technologies and AI-assisted reconstruction can help measure and correct atmospheric distortion for high-resolution imaging through turbulent air.

Cutting-edge astronomical instrumentation goes far beyond exoplanet detection, with photonic technologies offering exciting applications in free-space optical communications, remote sensing, satellite imaging, and advanced aerospace optical systems.
