Hey people - it's been a long while since anything has been posted here, there's been a lot to keep track of.

Long story short, Spatialised is open for new clients. Follow the link below for a look at recent projects around spatial data analysis, visualisation and cartography using drone maps and large scale data stores.

Need an analytical report or a piece of bespoke mappy art? Drop me a line.

Projects that are cartography focussed, or have a significant cartographic design component. These use QGIS and Inkscape as primary visualisation tools, with some cartographic Python and web visual…

In early 2020 the combined effects of bushfires and COVID19 pushed a lot of spare time into my hands. With that, I decided to try some mapping exercises around avalanche risk in Australia's Alpine regions. I've already written about obtaining and processing lidar data I used for the task - this story is about what comes next. This story is about using those high resolution lidar data to map avalanche risk factors....

The Svalbard archipelago, high in the Arctic, has no trees. Rendered in North Polar Stereographic with just the right contrast between bathymetry and topography, the island of Spitsbergen is transformed into a thick copse of forest! Perhaps we have found the mythical Yggdrasil, the tree connecting the 9 worlds. Or maybe, just a pretty map. This ironic poster - translating in English to 'Svalbard trees' - brings a symbolised forest made of treeless islands to your wall....

Svalbard has no trees. Perhaps ironically, if it is rendered just so in North Polar Stereographic and contrasting terrain with bathymetry, it springs to life as a majestic grove! Rendered in QGIS and Inkscape. Bathymetry comes from the International Bathymetric Chart of the Arctic Ocean (IBCAOv4), terrain is from the ASTER GDEMv3. Museum-quality posters made on thick and durable matte paper....

In a pretty big life and operations change, I've moved to Tromsø, Norway until at least mid-2023. I'm working as a postdoctoral researcher for the Norsk Polarinstitutt on sea ice physical processes in the Nansen Legacy Project - focussed on the Northern Barents Sea. This means that Spatialised now has to work around visa requirements, a day job, fieldwork and powder days - which seems like a OK tradeoff - it means we settle nicely into the niche of artisanal geoconsulting! The Mitta Mitta river runs year round, collecting water from the Victorian Alps and delivering it to the sea thousands of kilometres away via the Murray River. This depicts the catchment of the wild Mitta Mitta river, until it is stopped by Dartmouth Dam. Contour lines of the surrounding Victorian Alps give a hint of context. I’ve watched the Mitta Mitta river over a full annual cycle, a few before it becomes part of Lake Dartmouth. [ 69 more words ]
