Where should your time actually be spent?

I attended an SME workshop last week, and one of the discussions was looking at business processes, where improvements could be made, and how business owners spend their time.

It got me thinking about something I see regularly with small business owners:
Just because you can do something yourself, doesn't always mean it's the best use of your time.

Bookkeeping is a good example.

Many business owners can do their own bookkeeping, and when you're watching every business expense, it can seem like an easy one to keep in-house. But there’s another side to that decision.

How much of your time is being spent on it?

Could that time be better spent with customers, working on the business, or simply having some time back?

And if the bookkeeping isn't maintained accurately along the way, there can also be a much bigger cost later when months of records need to be cleaned up and corrected.

Sometimes the question isn't “Can I do this myself?” It's “Is this where my time is best spent?”

That's something worth thinking about when you're looking at your own business processes.

Fiction: “Doing my own bookkeeping saves me money.”

It might save you the monthly bookkeeping fee. But does it always save you money?

This was something that came up for me after attending an SME workshop this week. We were talking about processes, where business owners spend their time, and where improvements can be made.

Bookkeeping is one of those tasks many business owners can and often do themselves.

But when it gets pushed aside, done inconsistently, or simply becomes too much to keep up with, the cost can look very different.
- Months of transactions may need to be reviewed.
- Accounts may need to be reconciled.
- Errors may need to be found and corrected.
- And all that clean-up takes time.
Sometimes the cost of getting everything back into shape can far outweigh what would have been spent keeping the books maintained along the way.

I'm not saying business owners can't do their own bookkeeping.
The question is:

A financial spring clean starts with knowing where you stand.

Over the past few weeks, we've looked at some simple ways to take a fresh look at our finances:
- Small expenses that add up
- Regular payments and subscriptions
- The things we're continuing to pay for
- Whether our spending still reflects our priorities

None of it is about being told what you should or shouldn't spend your money on. It's about taking a moment to actually look.
What money is coming in?
What is going out?
What are you working towards?

Sometimes, simply having a clearer picture can make it easier to decide what matters and what might need a second look. And that's really what a financial spring clean is about, awareness, not perfection.

And just like that, we’ve reached the final week of our September Financial Spring Clean.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve looked at:
• What we’re paying for
• What we want our money to help us achieve
• What we actually have available

So, for our final week, there’s one more question worth asking:

Fiction: “If I’m spending money on it, it must be worth it.”

Reality: Does your spending actually reflect what matters to you?

This isn’t about telling you what you should or shouldn’t spend your money on. We all have different priorities, circumstances and things that matter to us.

It’s simply about taking a moment to look at your spending and ask:
- Am I getting value from this?
- Is it still important to me?
- Does it support what matters to me?
Sometimes the answer will be yes and that’s great. Other times, you might realise something no longer has the value it once did.

And that’s really what a financial spring clean is about: taking a closer look so you can make informed choices about your money.

We all have things that matter to us, whether that's keeping on top of household bills, saving for something important, running a business, spending time with family, or simply having a little more breathing room.

But sometimes our spending habits don't necessarily reflect those priorities.

Take a look at where your money is actually going and ask yourself:
- What matters most to me right now?
- Where is my money going?
- Do those two things line up?

It doesn't mean you need to cut out everything you enjoy.

It's about being aware of your spending and making choices that work for your circumstances and priorities.

It’s easy to look at your bank balance and assume that’s what you have available to spend.

But upcoming bills, regular payments, committed expenses and other financial obligations can all affect what’s actually available.

So, before making changes or thinking about future goals, take a closer look at:
- What’s coming in
- What’s going out
- What’s already committed

Sometimes a financial spring clean isn’t about making big changes. It’s simply about knowing where you stand.

It's easy for regular payments to slip under the radar.

Subscriptions, memberships, insurance, software and other services can continue month after month, sometimes long after we've stopped using them or getting the same value from them.

A financial spring clean is a good opportunity to take a fresh look at those recurring expenses and ask:
- Am I still using it?
- Do I still need it?
- Am I still getting value from it?

This applies to both personal and business finances.

It's not about cutting everything. It's about knowing where your money is going and making sure your spending still reflects your needs and priorities.
