Fact or Fiction Friday 💡

Fiction: If I haven't looked at it for a while, it's probably not important.

September is a great time for a Financial Spring Clean, not just in your business, but personally too.

We all have those things that get overlooked. A subscription we don't use anymore. A recurring payment we forgot about. An expense that has slowly increased. A service we're still paying for because we haven't taken the time to review it.

Individually, they might not seem like much. But over time, those small amounts can add up.

A Financial Spring Clean is simply about taking a fresh look at where your money is going and asking:
Do I still need this?
Is it still providing value?
Could that money be better used somewhere else?

It's not always about making big changes. Sometimes it's the small adjustments that make the difference.

And for businesses, regularly reviewing your financial information can help you stay on top of costs and make more informed decisions.

This September, let's give our finances a spring clean.

Need support keeping your business bookkeeping organised and up to date? AJR Bookkeeping & Admin Services provides tailored fixed-price monthly bookkeeping packages to help you stay on top of your books throughout the year.

For your personal finances, AJR also provides Personal Finance & Budget Reports, giving you a clearer understanding of your current financial position, spending patterns, cash flow and savings habits as well as helping identify opportunities to improve financial stability and work towards future goals.

Spend time on what matters - I'll look after the books.

Top Tip Tuesday 💡

Spring is here and it's a great time for a financial spring clean!

Whether it's your household budget or your business finances, it's easy for small expenses to creep in without us really noticing.

Take a fresh look at:
- What you're spending
- What you're paying for
- What you really need

That subscription you forgot about? The service you rarely use? The regular expense that's increased without you noticing?

Individually, they might not seem like much. But add them together over 12 months and they can make a surprising difference.

A financial spring clean isn't about cutting everything. It's about making sure your money is going towards the things that matter to you.

Fresh season. Fresh perspective.

Fact or Fiction Friday 💡

Fiction: Keeping your books up to date is just about EOFY.

Recently, I've been involved in completing accounts ready for an audit, and it really reinforced the value of keeping your bookkeeping accurate and up to date throughout the year.

Because the records were already up to date and accurate, the process took far less time than it has in previous years. There was no going back and forth looking for missing information, checking transactions or trying to work out what had happened months earlier.

Everything was there and ready when it was needed.

That's one of the benefits of good bookkeeping that can easily be overlooked. It's not just about getting through EOFY or meeting a deadline, it's about having reliable financial information whenever you or someone else needs to rely on it.

At AJR Bookkeeping & Admin Services, I provide tailored fixed-price monthly bookkeeping packages for businesses of all sizes, helping keep your records accurate and up to date throughout the year.

Good bookkeeping doesn't just make EOFY easier. It makes running your business easier.

If keeping on top of your bookkeeping is becoming difficult, alongside everything else you have to manage, I'd love to have a chat about how AJR can help.

This week's Top Tip Tuesday 💡 is one of those topics I think every small business owner should understand.

I've spoken with business owners who are making a profit but still wondering where all the money has gone. The answer often comes down to understanding the difference between profit and cash flow.

Your Profit & Loss and your bank balance are telling you different stories, and knowing how to read both can make a big difference to the decisions you make in your business.

Top Tip Tuesday 💡

Don’t confuse profit with cash flow.

It's possible to have a profitable business and still feel like there isn't enough money in the bank.

Why? Because profit and cash flow measure different things.

Profit - shows how your business is performing after income and expenses are accounted for.
Cash flow - shows the money actually coming into and going out of your business.

For example, you may have made sales and recorded a profit, but if your customers haven't paid their invoices yet, that money isn't available to pay your bills.

That's why both numbers matter.

Understanding the difference can help you make better decisions about spending, pricing, invoicing and planning ahead.

At AJR Bookkeeping & Admin Services, we help business owners keep their bookkeeping accurate and provide meaningful financial reporting so they can understand what their numbers are telling them, not just what is sitting in the bank.

Profit tells you how you're doing. Cash flow tells you what you can do.

Fact or Fiction Friday 💡

Fiction: I'll get to my bookkeeping when I have time.
Sound familiar?

For many business owners, bookkeeping isn't being ignored because it isn't important. It's being pushed aside because there are always other things demanding attention.

Customers, staff, suppliers, jobs, emails, family... the list goes on.

So, the bookkeeping gets pushed to tonight. Then the weekend. Then next week.

Before you know it, you're trying to catch up on months of transactions instead of simply keeping things up to date.
Ongoing monthly bookkeeping takes that pressure away.

Your books stay organised, your records stay current, and you don't have another unfinished task sitting at the back of your mind.

At AJR Bookkeeping & Admin Services, I provide tailored fixed-price monthly bookkeeping packages for businesses of all sizes. You'll know what your bookkeeping costs each month, with quarterly reporting included to help you keep an eye on how your business is performing.

You don't need to find more time for bookkeeping, you may just need some support with it.

Need support? I'd love to chat about how AJR can help.

A little late with this week's Top Tip Tuesday 💡 and somehow "Top Tip Thursday" just doesn't have quite the same ring to it!

This week's priorities have been a little different, with my focus on getting a NFP’s accounts ready for audit, so the TTT post had to wait.

But the tip is still worth sharing:

Top Tip Tuesday 💡

Don’t let your numbers surprise you.

One of the benefits of keeping your bookkeeping up to date is being able to see what is happening in your business while there is still time to do something about it.

Stay ahead by:
- Monitoring income and expenses
- Watching cash flow trends
- Reviewing changes as they happen

A sudden increase in expenses, a drop in income, or growing outstanding invoices can be much easier to address when you spot the change early.

Good bookkeeping isn't just about recording what has happened. It's about having the information you need to respond to what's happening now.

At AJR Bookkeeping & Admin Services, we keep your books accurate and up to date so you can have confidence in the numbers you're using to run your business.

Know what’s changing before it becomes a problem.

💡 Fact or Fiction Friday

One thing I think can easily get overlooked with bookkeeping is what happens after the transactions have been entered and reconciled.

Having your books up to date is important, but taking the time to actually look at the numbers can tell you so much more about what's happening in your business.

That's the focus of this week's Fact or Fiction Friday and it's also one of the reasons I include quarterly reporting in AJR's ongoing monthly bookkeeping service.

Fact or Fiction Friday 💡

Fiction: If my bookkeeping is up to date, I don't need to look at the numbers.

It's great to have your bookkeeping up to date, but what are you actually doing with the information? Keeping your bookkeeping up to date is important but it's only part of the picture.

Your books contain valuable information about how your business is performing. Looking at that information regularly can help you see changes in sales, costs, profitability and cash flow before they become bigger issues.

That's why I include quarterly reporting as part of AJR's ongoing monthly bookkeeping service. It gives you the opportunity to regularly step back from the day-to-day running of your business and see what your numbers are telling you.

AJR's tailored fixed-price monthly bookkeeping packages mean you know what your bookkeeping costs each month, while having ongoing support to keep your records organised and up to date.

Good bookkeeping isn't just about ticking a task off your "To Do" list. It's about having information you can use to make better business decisions.

Top Tip Tuesday 💡

Don’t just review your numbers. Use them.

Your financial reports are more than a snapshot of what has already happened. They can help you understand what's working, where money is being spent, and where there may be opportunities to improve.

Use your financial information to:
- Identify what's working
- Spot areas for improvement
- Make informed decisions

The real value comes from turning the information in your reports into action.

At AJR Bookkeeping & Admin Services, we believe your financial reports should do more than sit in your inbox. We help keep your bookkeeping accurate and organised so you can rely on the information behind your numbers and use it to make better business decisions.

Good information. Better decisions.

Fact or Fiction Friday 💡

Normally, I share a Top Tip Tuesday each week, but family commitments needed my attention this time.

It was a good reminder that we all have times when something else needs to come first.

Fiction: Missing a week means everything falls behind.

The reality is that good systems help keep everything on track, even when life gets busy.

The same applies to your bookkeeping. Keeping it up to date each month means you're not constantly trying to catch up if life throws you a curveball.

At AJR Bookkeeping & Admin Services, my tailored fixed-price monthly bookkeeping packages help businesses stay organised throughout the year, giving you the confidence that your books are up to date while you focus on running your business.

💡 Fact or Fiction Friday

One of the biggest sacrifices I see small business owners make isn't just their time - it's their evenings and weekends.

I was recently talking to a Grazier about the demands of running a farm. His days start at first light and often don't finish until the sun goes down. There are livestock to check, water systems to inspect, fences to repair, feed levels to monitor, machinery to maintain... and that's all before thinking about the paperwork.

When you're running a business like that, bookkeeping is often left until the evenings or weekends, simply because there's no time during the day. And with cash flow changing from season to season, keeping on top of the numbers is just as important as keeping on top of the work.

That conversation reminded me that most business owners don't fall behind because they don't care, they fall behind because they're busy doing what they do best.

Sometimes the real cost of doing your own bookkeeping isn't measured in dollars. It's measured in the weekends you give up, the family time you miss, and the mental load of knowing there's still paperwork waiting for you.
That's what inspired this week's Fact or Fiction Friday.

Fact or Fiction Friday 💡

Fiction: I only need a bookkeeper when I'm behind.

Many people think bookkeepers are only there to help when things have gotten out of control or EOFY is approaching.

The reality is that ongoing bookkeeping is about preventing those situations in the first place.

Keeping your books up to date each month means you always have organised records, a clearer understanding of your business performance, and less stress when important deadlines come around.

At AJR Bookkeeping & Admin Services, fixed-price monthly bookkeeping packages are tailored to help businesses stay organised throughout the year. With predictable monthly pricing and quarterly reporting included, you'll have regular insights into your business and the confidence of knowing your bookkeeping is under control.

If you'd like to spend less time catching up and more time focusing on your business, let's have a chat.
