Hajj, observed this year between 19 and 24 August, is the annual religious pilgrimage to Mecca with thousands of Aussie travellers heading to Saudi Arabia every year to participate.

If you are heading to Mecca and plan to bring gifts back with you, it’s important to know what traditional items may not be permitted.

Because Australia is free from many of the pests and diseases found in other parts of the world, items containing plant or animal products must be declared on your Incoming Passenger Card for inspection by biosecurity officers.

This includes products containing meat, dairy and fruit (like pomegranates, dates and figs) as well as neem and to***co.

Undeclared plant or animal material could introduce plant pests like the bacteria Xylella fastidiosa, Australia’s #1 priority plant pathogen, fruit flies or diseases like foot-and-mouth.

For more information on what gifts to avoid, visit our website at agriculture.gov.au/hajj-pilgrimage.

It's also a great idea to check smartraveller.gov.au before you head off on your trip.
