An Asset Protection Zone (APZ) is one of the most effective ways to reduce bushfire risk on a rural property. It’s a managed area of land around homes, sheds, stables and key infrastructure that slows, weakens, and sometimes stops a fire before it can cause serious damage.

How an Asset Protection Zone protects your property

🔥 Reduces fire intensity

By clearing or thinning vegetation, an APZ removes fuel. With less fuel to burn, fires are lower, slower, and less intense, making them far less destructive.

🚒 Gives firefighters a safer place to defend

APZs provide space for RFS crews to work safely, position trucks, and actively defend buildings—something that’s extremely difficult if vegetation is right up to structures.

🏠 Protects buildings and infrastructure

Maintained APZs help prevent:
• Direct flame contact
• Radiant heat damage
• Embers lodging in roofs, gutters, and under floors

This is critical for homes, but also stables, feed sheds, tack rooms, water tanks, and fencing.

🌬 Reduces ember attack (the biggest threat)

Most buildings are lost due to embers, not flames. APZs reduce nearby burning material, meaning fewer embers and less chance of spot fires starting around buildings.

🐎 Improves safety for people and animals

Clear zones create escape routes, safer assembly areas, and paddocks with lower fuel loads, which can be vital when you’re managing livestock or horses during fire season.

What an APZ usually includes

• Short grass, mown regularly
• Trees spaced so canopies don’t touch
• Removal of shrubs close to buildings
• No firewood, hay, or equipment stored against structures
• Clear access for emergency vehicles

In a bushfire, every metre counts. Creating an Asset Protection Zone (APZ) around your home or property can dramatically increase your safety — and give firefighters the space they need to defend it.

🌿 What’s an APZ?
A managed area around your home that reduces fuel loads, slows fire spread, and improves your chances of surviving a bushfire.

🏡 Why it matters:
✔ Increases property protection
✔ Helps safeguard your family and community
✔ Supports firefighting efforts
✔ Reduces ember attack and flame intensity

Now is the time to take action.

👉 Clear Prepare Protect

A well-maintained APZ could be the difference this fire season.
