Let's talk transmissions!

Transmissions get overlooked a lot and are easily neglected. Some manufacturers even boast a "fill for life" transmission's adding to this neglect

But here's the reality, transmissions still need servicing. Especially if the transmission is worked hard via heavy loads, towing, and even off-road driving. These condtions, repeated over time, can put excessive wear on the internal components of your transmission, leading to problems changing gears or even losing all drive entirely!

Regular servicing of your transmission can prevent excessive wear and extend the life of your transmission

Pictured is what we do when servicing your transmission. The old transmission filter is swapped out, and the pan is cleaned of any debris or metal filings caught in the bottom. Those rings you see. They're magnets placed on inside of the sump pan to catch the metal that gets worn off during operation. Checking this regularly during a transmission service can help to monitor your transmissions health

CORRECT DIAGNOSIS IS IMPORTANT!

This customer had a fuel leak issue. They called someone else in to diagnose the issue. The customer was unhappy that they only had a quick look and didn't try to pinpoint exactly where the leak was from. Their diagnosis was semi correct (it was diagnosed as leaking injector no.2), and the repair suggested was a new fuel injector, which for this vehicle was approximately $600rrp for just 1 injector!

That's when they called us. We arrived on site and got to work. Removing the intake manifold to gain access to the fuel rail. Removed the fuel rail and found a broken seal on injector 3!
A few phone calls later and a new set of injector seals were ordered

All of this was work was completed in under an hour and the best part, new seals only cost around $20. A lot better than $600!

So it really goes to show that correct diagnosis is crucial to ensuring the correct repair and saving you $$$

Let's talk about harmonic balancers

Not a super common issue but can cause an array of problems.

This customer noticed that their aircon stopped working and that their engine temperature gauge was rather sensitive. They finally called us when they heard a squeaking noise from the engine. By then, it was too late. The balancer had let go and caused a bit of damage. Luckily, it was mostly surface damage, and no further repairs required

The harmonic balancer or "crank pulley" is responsible for transferring the driving energy from the rotation of the crank shaft to the accessories such as water pump, air-conditioning, and the alternator via a drivebelt.

Notice the gap between the centre of the pulley to the outer ring? That is meant to have rubber to absorb crankshaft vibrations so that the drivebelt isn't affected by the vibrations. No vibration absorption leads to a situation like this

This is your reminder to get your car serviced!

This is what happens when you neglect to service your vehicle

This is what catastrophic engine failure looks like due to lack of servicing. A big hole in the engine block and the piston connecting rod hanging outside the engine!

The only repair for this kind of failure is to replace the engine, which is an expensive and time-consuming job

This customer complained of a grinding noise from the brakes. Luckily, we got to replacing them when we did! This could have spelt disaster had it been left longer

The first photo shows how wearing the brakes down past the friction material, or how it's more commonly expressed, "metal on metal" can cause such a noise. Those who have experienced this noise will know just how awful this noise is

The second photo shows how metal on metal can wear down the brake rotor down excessively. This is quite an extreme case and was not far from having the pad fall out

The third photo shows the metal filings that get thrown everywhere. Along with a grinding noise, this is another tell tail sign that your brakes need changing

The fourth photo shows the difference between a pad that has been worn down to the metal and a brand new pad. Notice how there's a metal tab? That's a wear indicator that will make a scraping noise to let you know that your pads are getting low!

The last photo shows the brand new brake pads and rotors fitted to the vehicle
