Earthcraft Earth-based workshops, retreats and handcrafted tools for connection, ceremony and remembering. Natural materials are sourced thoughtfully and respectfully.

Earthcraft offers earth-based workshops, retreats and handcrafted ceremonial tools for connection, creativity, ceremony and remembering. Founded by Michelle Niethe, Earthcraft brings together traditional handcraft, rhythm, reflection and respectful relationship with the living world. Experiences include medicine drum birthing, rattle making, plant relationship practices and other guided ceremonial

workshops. Each drum, rattle, feather saining tool and ceremonial piece is handcrafted with care and created to support the relationship between the object and the person who will carry it. Animal materials are ethically sourced or gathered from animals found deceased. Earthcraft is grounded in respect for yourself, respect for others and respect for the Earth.

Retreat days are not always quiet and graceful.

Sometimes you are sitting on the ground, pulling lacing through wet hide, trying to work out where the next piece needs to go.

I am right there when you need another pair of hands, something needs loosening or the whole thing simply does not make sense yet.

Then, little by little, the drum begins to come together.

These ordinary moments around the making table are often the ones I remember most. ๐ŸŒฟ

The New Moon offers almost no light by which to see the path ahead.

Perhaps that is part of its teaching.

Not every beginning asks for a plan, an announcement or a promise. Some begin beneath the surface - like a seed held in dark soil - before we have words for what is changing.

At this early edge of spring, pause before deciding what the season must become. Notice what is stirring. Give it attention without forcing it into form.

What are you willing to tend before you know what it will become?

Save this question for a quiet moment, or carry it with you on the land.

The Spring Equinox is often described as a moment of balance. But balance is not a place we reach and remain. It is a living relationship - continually noticed, adjusted and renewed.

As we turn toward increasing light in the Southern Hemisphere, pause with three questions:

What has become too heavy?
What has been neglected?
What now asks to grow?

Then choose one small, grounded act of restoration. Not a promise to transform everything. Simply a way to meet what is here.

Which of the three questions is speaking most clearly to you?

One question people sometimes ask me is, โ€œDo I need any experience to birth a drum?โ€

No, you really do not.

Most people arrive having never worked with hide, lacing or a drum hoop before. Some are confident with their hands, while others are quietly wondering whether they will manage it.

I guide you through each part, and there is plenty of help when something feels fiddly or confusing.

It isnโ€™t about making everything perfectly. It is about taking your time, learning the materials and gradually watching your drum come together beneath your own hands.

You donโ€™t need to arrive knowing how.

You only need to be willing to begin. ๐ŸŒฟ

You may notice that Earthcraft now uses the word saining rather than smudging.

Saining is an old Scots word for blessing, protecting or consecrating a person, place or object. For me, it better describes the intention behind the practice. It is not simply about clearing something away, but about bringing care, blessing and protection.

That is why the feather tools we make at Earthcraft are now called feather saining tools.

Language matters, and this word feels much closer to the heart of the work. ๐ŸŒฟ

I love watching the moment when a drum starts to take shape.

At the beginning, it is just a hoop, wet hide and a long piece of lacing. Then everyone gets their hands working. There is usually a bit of confusion, plenty of questions and sometimes a lace that needs to come back out and be done again.

That is all part of it.

I guide you through every step, but you birth your own drum with your own hands. By the time it is finished, you already know it in a way that you could never know something bought from a shelf.

And somehow, every drum ends up completely different. ๐ŸŒฟ

If youโ€™re new here, hello and welcome.

Iโ€™m Michelle, the hands and heart behind Earthcraft.

Most days youโ€™ll find me surrounded by drum hoops, hides, rattles, feathers, plants and a making table that is rarely as tidy as I would like it to be.

I run drum-birthing workshops and longer retreats, and I handcraft ceremonial tools. I also share some of what Iโ€™ve learnt about caring for drums, working with plants, saining and building a relationship with the things we make and use.

For me, a drum or rattle is never just another object. The materials have their own story, and something changes when we slow down and work with them using our own hands.

People find Earthcraft for all sorts of reasons. Some are ready to birth their first drum. Some want time away from the noise of everyday life. Others are simply curious and arenโ€™t quite sure what theyโ€™re looking for yet.

Wherever youโ€™re coming from, youโ€™re welcome here.

Michelle

One of my favourite parts of Spirit Quest is watching a collection of raw materials slowly become something personal.

Over the seven days, you will make your own medicine drum, drum be**er, rattle and feather saining tool, along with other small pieces created throughout the journey.

They are not made simply to take home and put on a shelf. You learn how to work with them, care for them and continue building your own relationship with them after the retreat.

No previous experience is needed. I will guide you through each piece, step by step.

This photograph gives you a little glimpse of what can come home with you. ๐ŸŒฟ
