This photo is from Wittenoom in the Pilbara, 1962. Blokes shoveling raw blue asbestos into 44 gallon drums as fast as they could. No masks, no PPE, nothing. Crowds standing around watching while the dust just hung in the air.

They used to run these as competitions. Whoever filled their drum first won. Just a bit of fun apparently.

Wittenoom was a crocidolite mine run by CSR from 1943 to 1966. Around 7,000 workers went through that site and another 13,000 lived in the town. They used blue asbestos on the roads, in the school playgrounds, even made pits of the stuff for kids to play in. 😬

Every single bloke in this photo except one has since died from asbestos related illness. The one survivor, Arthur Della Maddalena, was actually the bloke who won the comp that day. He hasn't been diagnosed with meso but a WA court awarded him compensation in 2004 for the psychological trauma of watching his mates, his colleagues and his own brother all die from it. Living every day wondering if he's next.

The town is basically abandoned now. Government looked into cleaning it up but the contamination is so bad and the cost so high it's still just sitting there.

This is the history of mining in this country. The stuff that happened before anyone gave a damn about safety. Next time someone on site has a whinge about doing a pre-start or wearing their PPE, show them this photo.

We've come a long way but we should never forget the blokes who paid the price so we could have the safety standards we have today. Rest easy fellas. 🙏
