G'day team. Week six, "What is ESG?"

You've probably seen the letters "ESG" floating around. They stand for Environmental, Social, and Governance.

In plain terms, it's about how a business treats the planet, how it treats people, and how well it's run. That's really all it is.

Now, here's the bit worth knowing. ESG itself isn't a law. It's more like a report card that investors, banks, and larger companies use to size up a business. What is the law is the climate reporting we've been chatting about over the past few weeks. That's just one part of the ESG picture.

So, if someone mentions "ESG" to you, don't stress. It's not a new form. It's just the umbrella term for all this. Same rule as always. If you're not sure what they're actually asking for, bring it to me. Righto, let's get into it.

G'day team! Week five, "Do I need an environmental policy?"

Short answer, yeah, nah, maybe, not always.

If you're a one-person operation, nobody's expecting you to turn up with pages of corporate paperwork. That's not what this is for.

What matters most is being honest about how your business works, what you use, how 'you' work, and where you could do things a bit better over time.

A good answer to a customer isn't a fancy document. It's knowing your own operation and being straightforward about it. Ohh, and add a short disclaimer or methodology... that will help too.

Same deal as always. If someone asks you for a policy and you're not sure what they're after, bring it to me. Righto, let's get into it.

That doesn't mean you need fancy equipment.
Usually it's a sensible calculation based on your electricity bill and the proportion of the house used for business.

It's about understanding what information you already have.
Things like electricity bills, fuel receipts and vehicle kilometres are a great place to start.

G'day team, week two of our Scope 3 chats, "Why are my customers asking me this stuff?"

Fair question. Sometimes it feels like just another form to fill in.

But here's the reason, plain and simple. Big businesses now need better information about the companies they work with. That's it.
They're not trying to catch anyone out. They're not checking up on us. They're simply trying to understand their own supply chain, and we're part of it.

So, if the questions start landing, don't take it personally. It's not about us doing something wrong; it's about them doing their job properly.

A gentle reminder for leaders across business, government and community organisations:

Leadership is Stewardship.

There are some interesting conversations underway right now across Tasmania, from land use and carbon initiatives to emerging technologies and infrastructure investment, highlighting something important: Tasmanians care deeply about the future of this island we call home, and rightly so.

The conversation we should be having is how to ensure today's decisions create value for Tasmanians, protect the places we depend on, and leave a legacy we can be proud of.

Every significant decision should be considered through a simple Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) lens;

1. How does this project affect our environment, natural resources and long-term sustainability?

2. How does this project affect each other, communities, livelihoods, opportunities and future generations?

3. Was the decision-making process transparent, responsible and based on meaningful information?

These are fundamental People, Planet and Purpose considerations.

The community is not simply a stakeholder to consult ‘after’ decisions are made. The community is the reason many organisations exist… Is it time to reflect on our organisational chart and our vision statements, perhaps?

"What's all this Scope 3 business?"

G'day team! For this week’s Toolbox Monday, “Scope 3.”
You might've heard the term floating around.

Basically, some of the big companies we work for, including other bigger tradies, government, mining, and corporates, now have to report on their climate impact, and that includes everyone in their supply chain. That's us!

If one of your larger clients asks about fuel or energy use, or anything similar, that's what this is about. Nothing sneaky, just them doing their job properly.

So, if that question ever comes up, don't panic. You'll know what they're on about.
