Day 5: Outbreak Readiness with Epidemiology & Simulation
Advanced diagnostics demand modern response frameworks. During a major outbreak, traditional contact tracing isn't enough. Epidemiology—analysing pathogen pathways—is vital for tracing transmission chains, pinpointing sources, and assessing real-time risks.

Ausvet collaborates with government partners to build national strategies that integrate data sharing directly into emergency response. We plan using simulation platforms, Point of Care (POC) diagnostic rollouts and evaluate carcass management strategies in remote regions before real crises occur.

Information Systems & Offshore Biosecurity Defence
Protecting Australia means supporting regional neighbours. Transboundary diseases don't stop at international borders. Ausvet helps strengthen Australia's biosecurity perimeter by building operational capacity and implementing digital health platforms across the Indo-Pacific.

Our team helped sustainably design and implement iSIKHNAS, an animal health information system used to monitor and manage animal health in Indonesia. It receives 60 000 data points daily, has 28 000 registered users and tens of millions of identified animals.

We also partner on regional initiatives—such as improving border quarantine checks between West Timor and Timor-Leste, and creating practical emergency response plans for Papua New Guinea and Pacific Island nations.

How you can help: International travellers should always declare food, plant, and animal items upon arrival to prevent bringing exotic pathogens into the country. If in doubt, chuck it out.

Local action is our front line of defence. National biosecurity is only as strong as its most remote location. Through initiatives like the Cattle Industry Funding Scheme (IFS) and partnerships with groups like the Kimberley Pilbara Cattlemen's Association (KPCA), Ausvet works alongside northern pastoralists to tackle on-the-ground challenges and enhance biosecurity practices.

Delivering practical risk assessment training and interactive workshops that translate high-level epidemiological concepts into tailored, station-specific biosecurity plans. These tools empower managers to identify hazards and apply biosecurity measures designed for their specific property.

How you can help: Landholders can regularly audit entry points, keep up-to-date visitor logs, and ensure new livestock undergo appropriate isolation and health checks. Travellers and tourists can also take precautions and be courteous, ensuring they reduce their impact on the biosecurity of farms.

Recent incursions such as H5 High Pathogenicity Avian Influenza (HPAI) remind us why constant vigilance is key. Biosecurity isn't just a set of static rules—it's an evolving shield safeguarding our multi-billion-dollar agricultural industries, human health, and native ecosystems from emergency animal diseases.

Staying secure means moving from reactive emergency management to proactive, continuous preparedness. This week, we're highlighting how robust data systems and early warning frameworks help us try to stay ahead of shifting disease landscapes.
