Welcome to 2026! ๐Ÿฅ‚

2025 was a big year of impactful science here at Ausvet. From the bush to the ocean, Australia and abroad, we worked across an incredible range of challenges.

The team is back in the office (and the field!) for 2026. We are excited to continue our work strengthening animal health systems to support global health and food security.
With lots of great collaborations planned, we look forward to working alongside our partners, clients, and the global scientific community to turn evidence into action.

Stay tuned for more updates! Please reach out to discuss any of our previous projects or how we can work together to solve the next big challenge in animal health!

Today, Tuesday 9th December is International Day of Veterinary Medicine. For Ausvet this is an important day celebrated annually as it recognises veterinarians' crucial role in animal health, animal welfare, public health, biosecurity and food security, something all of the vets here are passionate about!
Of course for those of us with pets at home, we also appreciate the often-thankless task our veterinarians do for our fur-families. So today, , don't forget to
, for their efforts in safeguarding animals and ultimately humans. ๐Ÿ™

Connecting at !

Last week, Ausvet's Ben Madin and Michelle McGovern were excited to meet and spend time with Forum AWO Indonesia - Indonesian Animal Welfare Officer's Forum in Perth.
They enjoyed connecting with the incredible team, learning from Cindy Heryanti Kusuma Wardhani's excellent presentation, and continuing discussions at the gala dinner.

Thanks Cindy Heryanti Kusuma Wardhani, Khofidin, Niken W. and Neny Santy Jelita Lumbantoruan, we hope the team loved exploring the Fremantle Port and Kings Park!

Itโ€™s World AMR Awareness week and we are sharing the stories behind the stats.

AMR or antimicrobial resistance is a critically important global health challenge.
AMR is invisible but its victims are not. The consequences are far reaching, affecting animals, humans, agriculture, food security, biodiversity and the environment.
A true One Health challenge.
Tackling AMR and saving our medicines is possible but we must act now and act together.

In the lead up to One Health Day, we are sharing stories about the surprising ways in which the health of humans, animals, and the environment are interconnected. We canโ€™t have one without the other.

This week, the Pacific Community-SPC hosted the Pacific One Health HPAI Emergency Preparedness & Response workshop in Fiji ๐ŸŒด

Ausvet's experts Edwina Leslie and Emma Zalcman were invited to share their knowledge on High pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) risk, response plans, and surveillance. It was a week full of great conversations, collaboration, and learning. Thanks SPC for hosting.

Our team has been busy this week!

In Indonesia, Prama Rangga, Firdha Aulia, Sonny Handaru, and Isabel MacPhillamy are proud to have led the AWO-BIO (Animal Welfare Officers-Biosecurity) Training for Trainers in South Tangerang.

The core aim of this training was to equip participants with the skills to develop biosecurity Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that are specifically tailored to their facilities' unique conditions. While the training had a significant focus on mitigating the impacts of FMD and L*D, it will also help enhance overall biosecurity and animal welfare standards.

A big thank you to the Indonesian Quarantine Authority for acknowledging the training, and Meat and Livestock Australia for their invaluable support in making this event possible.

Last week, Ausvet's experts Havan Yusuf and cuong nguyen were proud to partner with Jabatan Perkhidmatan Veterinar Malaysia and the World Organisation for Animal Health to facilitate a workshop aimed at strengthening pharmacovigilance systems in veterinary medicine. This work is vital for protecting animal health, food safety, and public health while supporting national and global efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The hugely successful workshop brought together stakeholders from across sectors, fostering collaboration and identifying practical pathways to harmonise systems in Malaysia.

๐Ÿ‘ A big thank you to everyone involved for their contributions toward strengthening systems that protect animal and human health.

Celebrating World Rabies Day 2025: How digital tools are transforming rabies control in Vietnam

Each year, on September 28, the world unites for World Rabies Day (WRD) to raise awareness and take action for rabies elimination. In 2025, we are calling on you, me, and our communities to take responsibility, work together, and drive real change.

Rabies remains a major problem for communities around the world. Did you know that dog-mediated rabies accounts for 99% of rabies cases in humans globally?

Ausvet is proud to be contributing to Vietnam's ambitious rabies vaccination program using our Livestock Identification and Registrations System (LIRS) platform (lirs.io)! ๐Ÿพ

Using QR codes on dog collars, our cloud based traceability system records animal details, ownership, location and vaccination status. Animal locations are easily mapped and this is updated after each QR scan. This exciting technology provides real-time, verifiable data, allowing authorities to manage mass vaccination campaigns by:

๐Ÿ• Providing easy traceability of vaccinated animals.
๐Ÿ• Preventing duplicate vaccinations.
๐Ÿ• Allowing quick status checks with minimal animal handling.

Our Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) office chief, Dr Nguyen van Cuong, has been working with vaccination teams to tag dogs and in October he is heading out into the field to extend the program into D**g Thap province then HCMC.

This is powerful progress. Data generated by this program is game changing for both animal and human health, allowing agencies to:

๐Ÿ’ก Identify disease hotspots
๐Ÿ’ก plan for potential outbreaks
๐Ÿ’ก coordinate post-exposure prophylaxis delivery, and
๐Ÿ’ก track progress towards the 70% vaccination target.

Real time data drives real change. Let's make rabies elimination a reality!

๐ŸŒWhere in the world is Ausvet?
From Jakarta to the Kimberley, our experts have been out and about sharing their knowledge.

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฉ In Jakarta, Ausvet was invited to speak at the ILDEX 2025 conference about a critical issue: recovering Indonesia's swine industry from the threat of ASF. Our own Sonny Handaru presented an impactful case study on ASF in smallholder pig farms and outlined how to bolster preparedness.

๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ Over in Australia, consultant Isabel MacPhillamy presented her project on assessing the Kimberley and Pilbara's preparedness for Lumpy Skin Disease. She's had some great yarns with the region's station managers while investigating their unique biosecurity challenges.

It's all part of our mission to protect animal health and biosecurity across the globe.
