Disappointment
Disappointment
Disappointment is not something that I feel very often. I am very conscious of my mindset, both in and out of the arena, and I fill my days and training sessions with gratitude and opportunities.
Today I felt disappointment. In myself, the situation or something else I'm not quite sure yet, but I thought it was worth sharing, to help anyone reframe disappointment if it turns up in their day.
Phil has been helping with Boogie transitioning from the hackamore into the 2 rein (bridle) and she has been going beautifully. It is a significant change for a almost 17 year old horse, and I perhaps have felt a little guilty that it has taken me this long to 'step her up' into a outfit that she more than deserves.
Today, we headed out of the arena, and it started really well, she was forward and walking out, I actually said to Phil that she felt a little 'up' - for context 'up' for boogie is a little bit of a fast walk, a pep in her step, and ears forward - still easily managed on a loose rein. We headed for a short walk around the property, and when we came to a causeway, which has a downhill slope, Boogie struggled. She was feeling the bridle (I hadn't uptaken any more rein, its just the hanging balance of it) and as she headed down the hill, it shifted a little, and she threw her head a few times, and then got locked in her feet. I could feel it was a genuine struggle, and her inability to figure out how to balance her body, in an engaged frame to help her go down the hill. I ended up dismounting and walking her forward, lunging her around a couple of times on flat ground to rebuild her confidence, and then we rode on flat ground, introducing some bend and a much more mild hill. We ended on a really good note, and she progressed none the less.
BUT, I was dissapointed. Mainly I think because she struggled, and It's been a long time since I saw Boogie struggle with anything. I said to Phil maybe I had jumped ahead of the training, that she wasn't ready to be out and about, and he disagreed - he pointed out that the arena has no hills, so there was always going to be a 'first time' with her having to learn how to carry the bridle up and down hills etc.
Ive reflected, and I am looking forward to tomorrows training session, I have some ideas to try, and I have processed my disappointment, realising that the only way I am disappointed is because I had an expectation that wasn't met. I expected this process to be perfect, and certainly the first half a dozen sessions were.
So when I let go and surrender to the process, my disappointment dissipates and becomes excitement at the information that I received in the session, and how I can help her tomorrow.
I know for alot of people disappointment results in a paralysis, a now inability to move forward for fear of 'ruining' the horse, or simply getting stuck in the attachment and personalisations of our expectations not being met. If we can use 'imperfect' situations to give us information to help the horse, then we can progress at a pace that works for both of us,
Of course professional help may be needed depending on what you are working on, but next time you feel disappointment, unpack the situation and see if you can't reframe it for the betterment of the both of you,
A huge thankyou to Phil Monaghan, Jaquima a Freno, Classical Horsemanship.
