Throwback to the Health and Medical Research Building at Flinders University, delivered last year.

DALI is the ideal fit for a multi-use building like this, where the requirements change from room to room.

PC2 laboratories and animal holding rooms run to their own conditions, on settings and scenes kept separate from the rest of the building, holding steady overnight.. Offices and seminar rooms stay properly lit while people are in them and pull back to save energy the moment they're empty. Gallery spaces get changed on the day, by the staff and artists using them, straight from the zencontrol mobile app.

One zencontrol DALI system covers all of it, with daylight harvesting throughout, helping achieve the building's Gold WELL rating and a Five Green Star rating. ⭐

Why specify DALI-2 for a school? 🎓

Because a school isn't finished when the builder hands over the keys. It's maintained, expanded and re-purposed for decades.

That's the thinking behind the lighting control at Gregory Hills Public School, completed in July 2024 and now NSW Education's benchmark for EFSG-compliant control.

DALI-2 is an open, certified protocol, so every device is tested for interoperability. A facilities team can replace a sensor or add a new wing in ten years' time without being locked to a single manufacturer.

The whole campus runs on a single fully monitored DALI-2 network. With zencontrol Cloud, the entire site is visible remotely: faults diagnosed quickly, emergency reporting automated, and far fewer trips to site for the maintenance team.

Meet Darren Mullighan, Customer Success Manager at Lumen Resources!

With 15 years in the industry, Darren came to lighting control from a background in IT. But what really sets him apart? Ask him what the most rewarding part of the job is and he won't name a system, a protocol or a project. For Darren, it's the trust his customers place in him.

Moving into lighting control gave him the chance to take his curiosity for technology and put it into practice. It's a hands on industry, and in his words, contributing to lighting control and the wider electrical industry provides a level of gratification that is earnt.

Ask Darren about a moment at Lumen Resources he's proud of and you'll get two very different answers: coming second at the team go karting event, and the friendships he's formed with customers along the way.
And when he's not working through lighting control challenges? Family. Brisbane is next on the travel list, taking them to all the iconic theme parks.

Fun fact about Darren: he loves just giving something a go, and it's how he discovered his interest in woodworking and pen making. That's one of his in the photo.

His advice to his 18 year old self? Be curious, be hands on. It applies to all things in life.

Thanks for the feedback on the zencontrol to Home Assistant driver. Here is what has changed since we shared it.

You can now monitor button presses from zencontrol in Home Assistant, including push button and absolute inputs.
Automatic load detection sets a relay up as a switchable load and keeps DALI lights as dimmable targets.

Manual override for entities lets fans and blind controllers sit on the DALI line and be controlled properly.
Plus a long list of bug fixes.

Local control of your DALI lights, straight from Home Assistant. RGBW and tunable white, scene control, sensor status in your automations, and automatic discovery once you enter your controller IP address.

Project Spotlight: Vision Cabling Systems at Mungala Resort, Onslow Iron WA

Vision Cabling delivered the electrical works and system integration on one of the most remote DALI-2 projects in Australia.

A $140 million MinRes (Mineral Resources) resort in the Pilbara, Western Australia. 500 rooms and extensive worker amenities including an airport, restaurants, a tavern, gym, medical building and sports courts. The major communal buildings and airport are running on a full zencontrol DALI-2 system.

The system has around 1,500 DALI devices and over 35 application controllers. Most luminaires are dimmable, with motion sensors and switches for automated control throughout.

At more than 1,200 km from Perth, remote management is essential. zencontrol Cloud lets facilities teams find faults, order parts and plan maintenance from a web browser, without needing to travel to site. Commissioning and updates can also be done remotely, reducing unnecessary trips.
