2026 – the year that keeps on giving for barley diseases…

This time, barley leaf rust is joining the party.

We’re starting to see leaf rust showing up in crops, adding another disease to keep an eye on as barley moves quickly through its growth stages.

With plenty of yield potential still on the table, keep checking the upper canopy and know your variety’s resistance rating. Protecting green leaf area through grain fill is what matters now.

Spring is coming… and so are the aphids.

As temperatures start to climb, aphid populations can build quickly across canola, cereals and pulses.

A few things to keep in mind:
• Know which aphid you’ve got – species matters for both risk and control.
• Check the whole paddock – populations can be very patchy.
• Look for beneficials – ladybirds, hoverflies, lacewings and parasitoid wasps can do a lot of the heavy lifting.
• Consider crop stress and thresholds before spraying – seeing aphids doesn’t automatically mean they need controlling.

With crops moving quickly, now is the time to start keeping a closer eye on what’s happening in the canopy.

🌸 Almond Update | Early Bloom Begins

The first flowers are starting to appear in Central West NSW.

Both of these varieties naturally flower over an extended period, and with the warm winter we’ve experienced we’re expecting a long, drawn-out flowering period this season. While bloom is starting earlier than we’d normally expect, we’re still only seeing the first flowers rather than full bloom.

With rain in the forecast, many growers will now be planning fungicide applications to protect against blossom blight. Early bloom is generally the ideal timing to get protection onto the flowers before infection conditions arrive, although copper remains the backbone of many early-season programs.

We’re also starting to pick up the first signs of black peach aphid moving into orchards, so it’s a good time to keep an eye on young shoots during routine monitoring.
