Aaron Spong for Eppalock Ward

Aaron Spong for Eppalock Ward I’m Aaron Spong, Councillor for the Eppalock Ward. I’m an independent candidate with no party or political affiliation. Vote 1 Aaron Spong’

I’ve been in small business for the past 20 years.
8 years in Heathcote
My priorities and key issues include better roads, more footpaths, drainage and street lighting, free hard rubbish collection +more. I’m Aaron Spong the local candidate for the Eppalock Ward and I have been a small cafe owner in Heathcote ‘Fodder’ for the past 8 years. My priorities and key issues include:
- Better roads, more

footpaths, drainage and street lighting.
- The introduction of an annual free kerbside hard rubbish collection, as other councils provide.
- Upgrade local swimming pools, extend there hours and keep the gates open. I’m a strong believer that politics should be left out of local councils and that the councillors roll is to represent the residents of that Ward first and foremost. I will be the only local voice for the Eppalock Ward and certainly know what the residents want. I have never been a member or apart of any political party or union and don’t feel the need to be as my decisions won’t be influenced and be done in the best interests of the residents of the Eppalock Ward. I will be consulting with, and listening to residents having their concerns heard by council. Ensure genuine consultation occurs with all people and groups

Living in the Eppalock Ward and running a small business for the past 8 years - unlike my opponent. I’m familiar with the issues affecting the residents here. If elected I will ensure that all future rate increases will not exceed the state government percentage cap. For ‘you to have your voice heard’
‘You can’t go wrong.

Damage to new Heathcote Basketball Half Court

Damage to the recently completed Heathcote Basketball Half Court has been identified.

The damage is to the acrylic playing surface and believed to have been caused by use of an e‑scooter or e-bike on the surface. Whilst much of the damage is superficial, there are several areas where the acrylic coating has been completely removed, exposing the concrete base.

Cleaning and repairs works will now be programmed.

ARE YOU PLANNING TO BUY, BUILD OR DEVELOP?

The City of Greater Bendigo is hosting an information session in March to help community members understand planning basics and learn how to effectively research a property.

The free session, Planning 101 and researching a property, will be held at The Capital on March 19 from 5.30pm to 6.30pm. Following the presentations, there will be an opportunity for the audience to ask questions and hear from planning experts.

The information sessions provided a sound introduction for anyone planning to buy, build or develop in Greater Bendigo.

The Greater Bendigo Planning Scheme controls how we use and develop land in Greater Bendigo. It includes state and local planning policies, zones, overlays and other requirements that affect what can be built.

This free session aims to demystify planning and give community members essential planning basics, including how to research a property using tools available on the City’s website. It will also highlight important services that City staff can provide to guide people who are looking to buy, build or develop.

The tools for researching a property provide a wealth of information for landowners and prospective buyers, and this session will demonstrate how easy it is to access the information you need, when it suits you.

A question-and-answer session will follow, providing a great opportunity for people to better understand planning rules, processes and how they can be involved in supporting more housing in Greater Bendigo.

This information session is part of a series to help community members who are considering options to buy, build or develop.

Future sessions will cover topics such as subdivision, building a second dwelling, and understanding environmentally sustainable design. More details on these sessions will be available once registrations open.

Heathcote Basketball Half Court at the Heathcote Skate Park- UPDATE

Construction of the new Heathcote Basketball Half Court at the Heathcote Skate Park is progressing on schedule. To establish the new pad, a site cut was required and this has resulted in a larger amount of excess soil than initially anticipated.

Adjacent to the new pad is a small BMX track with several jumps. This track has seen limited use due to:
A heavy infestation of bindi weeds, causing immediate punctures to bike tyres
Large rocks present throughout the track, presenting greater safety risks for riders

Some local riders began removing the bindis and rocks themselves and then lodged a customer request for remediation works. These works were completed, with a positive community response.

A further nine customer requests have since been received seeking broader track improvements.

A site meeting was held with track users and parents to discuss issues, understand usage patterns, and identify opportunities to enhance the space.

As an outcome, the excess soil generated from the site cut has been used to:
Re‑form and extend the BMX track
Create new jumps
Improve the neighbouring swale drain to reduce flooding impacts

These works are beyond the initial project’s scope however have provided a safer, more engaging space for local riders and addressed some long‑standing maintenance issues.

The additional works were made possible through the responsiveness of staff from the City’s Engineering Unit.

“It’s an important program and we want to see as many groups as possible accessing the funding available”

“The Medium Grants category provides up to $10,000 to help community groups cover essential costs and deliver activities that align with the Council Plan Mir wimbul 2025-2029 or a local community plan.

“The Community Grants Program makes a real difference for local groups as without this funding they would often not be able to undertake important activities that benefit our community.

“To be considered for a community grant, applicants must be a registered legal entity such as an incorporated association. However, if you are informal group or individual your application can be submitted by an auspice organisation.

“Before applying, groups should consider if there is a clear need for their activity, if there is community support for their activity and if they have the resources needed to deliver the activity.

“Grants Officers are available to provide advice, and we recommend applicants speak to our team about their project by calling 1300 002 642.”
