With seven years in aquaculture, including lobster and prawn production, I focus on practical, data-driven decision making to improve performance, efficiency and farm outcomes.

Meet Shannon Burchert - NSILP 2026 Cairns cohort participant

I am a Senior Fisheries Policy Officer with NT Fisheries, based in Darwin, with more than 11 years’ experience across aquaculture, fisheries research, compliance policy and aquatic resource management in both the Northern Territory and Western Australia. I hold a PhD focused on the spatio temporal dynamics of recreational fisheries, which underpins my commitment to evidence based and transparent management.

I currently lead reef fish recovery work in the Northern Territory, supporting the rebuilding of key stocks while maintaining sustainable access for recreational, commercial and tourism fishers where possible. My role involves working closely with stakeholders to develop practical, science informed approaches that balance ecological sustainability with community and industry needs.

I am participating in the National Seafood Industry Leadership Program to further develop my leadership capability and apply those skills to my work in Fisheries — particularly in supporting collaborative decision making, strengthening stakeholder relationships and helping guide long term, sustainable management outcomes for the Northern Territory.

I’m the Quality Assurance & Safety Officer at Tasmania Blue Seafood. I’m responsible for monitoring GMP’s and the HACCP Plan. My day-to-day duties also include being a forklift operator and training to take on a managerial/leadership role.

I am participating in the NSILP to learn more about the seafood industry and develop a better understanding of the direction that I want to take my career.

Meet Rebecca Zaghini - NSILP 2026 Cairns cohort participant

Rebecca has been working in the wild caught seafood retail sector for nearly 20 years. She has built her business Wild Local up with her husband to give visitors and locals access to local quality seafood. Recently she has helped create Wild and Fresh -Hinchinbrook which is a community of commercial fishers, scientists and retailers, who come together to highlight issues and to support each other.

She is extremely hard working and motivated to help her community get the recognition and respect they deserve. She is currently working on an industry event called Spotlight on Hinchinbrook September 2026 to bring the industry together in Hinchinbrook and find a secure path forward for the wild caught fisheries. She is a collaborator, a connector and a seafood lover, living her best life in Hinchinbrook, North Qld.

I am a Research Fellow at James Cook University applying genomics to advance sustainable aquaculture. With over 20 years in the seafood sector, beginning in Vietnam in rural development and aquaculture, I now collaborate with industry partners to strengthen selective breeding and productivity.

I’m joining the 2026 NSILP to strengthen my leadership and strategic capability so I can better support aquaculture breeding, sustainability and industry outcomes, and to collaborate across sectors to drive long term industry impact.

I aim to develop shared genomic resources that strengthen breeding programs and improve stock performance across the aquaculture industry. I also want to build stronger collaboration between research, industry and government to support sustainable aquaculture.

I am currently finalising my PhD at James Cook University (JCU). For the thesis, I developed the first successful gene editing protocol for barramundi. Mid-2026, I will continue further developing this research with the industry partner in a postdoctoral role.

Dr Lindsey Woolley is a Principal Research Scientist with the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (WA), Aquaculture Research and Development. Her work focuses on marine finfish production, fish health and nutrition research and the translation of applied research into commercial outcomes. She works closely with industry and research partners to support the growth of aquaculture in Western Australia.

Lindsey is participating in the NSILP to strengthen her leadership beyond technical delivery. She aims to contribute to a trusted, innovative and resilient seafood industry, where research supports the production of responsible high-quality food and enables practical, sustainable growth.
