🌱 Turning Soil Data into Better Decisions!

OptiSoil's Ned Skehan was pleased to present at AgriFocus 2026, held in Streatham, Victoria, on Wednesday, 21 October.

Hosted by Southern Farming Systems, the event brought together farmers, agronomists and industry experts to share the latest research, technology and practical farming solutions.

Ned's presentation, "Turning Soil Data into Better Decisions", highlighted the importance of understanding what's happening beneath the surface to support smarter farming decisions.

A great opportunity to share knowledge, connect with industry professionals and showcase the work we're doing at OptiSoil.

Thanks to Southern Farming Systems (SFS) for a fantastic event!

Where should a moisture probe go in a cotton field? Placement matters if its readings are going to help guide irrigation through summer.

With the cotton season underway, we’ve been EM mapping fields and combining the survey data with topography. EM readings can show patterns of soil variation, while topography helps us consider where a site sits in the landscape. Together, they help identify probe locations that represent the soil types and slope classes being managed.

An EM map doesn’t confirm soil type or explain every change in soil moisture on its own. Field observations and other soil information remain important when choosing the final location.

If you’re planning moisture probe placement this season, we can help you work through the field data before installation.

‼️ Smarter Irrigation Planning in Central West NSW ‼️

At OptiSoil, we are undertook an Electromagnetic (EM) and Gamma radiometric survey in Central West New South Wales, supporting the early stages of a new irrigation development. This project is a crucial part of due diligence, ensuring infrastructure placement is aligned with underlying soil conditions before significant investment is made.

Our work focuses on identifying subtle changes in soil types across the landscape. This information is essential for irrigation design, enabling clients to plan effectively, avoid future issues, and optimise system performance.

What sets OptiSoil apart is our use of the DualEM21S, a leading-edge sensor capable of reading soil conductivity down to three metres deep. This depth is particularly important when it comes to detecting buried sandy streams and other subsurface features that could impact water movement, infiltration, or root development.

By integrating EM and Gamma survey data with our soil science expertise, we help land managers make informed decisions from the ground up, literally.

If you're planning an irrigation development, get in touch to find out how deep soil insights can secure your investment.

From the Yorke Peninsula, SA, we collected EM, gamma, and topography data, followed by calibration cores.

Collecting calibration cores alongside geophysical data is essential. It allows us to quantify any influence soil moisture may have on EM readings and improves the accuracy of our mapping.

Equally important is where we core. Strategic placement helps us understand the soil profile and identify the layers we are working with. This particular core showed considerable variation through the profile before reaching stone at around 50 cm.

From each core we collect 3 to 4 samples based on soil horizons. This approach enables us to build accurate maps of soil chemistry and profile structure, providing a strong foundation for informed management decisions.

This combination of field measurement, targeted sampling, and soil science is central to how we deliver value at OptiSoil.

Digital Soil Mapping

Zoning Analysis:
• Soil maps delivered interactively in chosen GIS platform, in addition to PDF. Field zoning by integration of available yield and soil maps.
• Chemical and physical properties.
• Depth to constraint maps, 3D understanding of constraints to root growth.
• Quantification of spatial uncertainty to ensure soil maps are fit for purpose.
• Statistically based spatial modelling to identify soilbased yield drivers.
• Analysis of importance of individual measured and mapped soil properties on yield variation in each season. Yield drivers change depending on the most seasonally apparent constraint.
• Zone maps, variable rate files and trial design supplied to
PCT Agcloud or other platform of choice.

Soil analysis:
• Chemical & physical analysis on 4 soil segments between 0 and 100cm to facilitate 3D soil maps.
• Additional analytes and combinations are available for specific needs.
• Test methods are based on procedures as described in Soil Chemical Methods – Australasia (2011) Rayment and Lyons.

Soil coring:
• Intact 0-100 cm, 50mm cores.
• Allowing for calculation of bulk density and visual analysis of soil through the profile for the identification of textual and colour changes, compaction layers and rooting depth.

*OptiSoil has a flexible approach to sample design and characteristics to be measured. Including grid sampling. All jobs will have a detailed quote attached.
