Nourished Landscapes is a SEQ-based permaculture design and consulting business passionate about creating thriving, productive gardens and resilient communities. The area, known to be in a “rain shadow”, receives a lot less average annual rainfall than the greater Brisbane region. We’re implementing a permaculture design whilst still working full-time jobs, with the aim to be off grid and more sel

f-sufficient. Different regenerative planning and management techniques are applied. There is an abundance of native trees and shrubs now compared to when we moved in, in March 2016. Different perennial growing systems, water harvesting earthworks, zero waste nursery/worm farm, a grey water garden, and wicking beds have been implemented. We also raise and harvest on-site our own ducks, geese, turkeys, chickens and pigs, and utilise hot and cold smokers. On the property are several native and European honeybee hives. Volunteer with us! Our volunteer mornings are designed to teach you sustainable growing methods and bring together like-minded people. We provide lunch and a chance to see our gardens, animals and grow systems. We host these volunteer mornings ever few weeks. We run different workshops on the topic of self-sufficiency, facilitate external workshops and provide food growing one on one coaching and property consultations.

A transformation we regularly do turning ornamental garden beds into productive, beautiful edible landscapes.
This client already had plenty of fruit trees growing in pots, but they were becoming high-maintenance and many had outgrown their containers. We planted the existing trees into the ground, added a selection of support plants, and created a resilient, low-maintenance edible system.

That is 2026 meat production done and dusted from processing the lawnmowers, and that's only half of the meat for the year.

I'm incredibly proud of the woofers, particularly Maya. She got through the initial shock and handled the experience with courage and an open mind. I was also impressed that everyone, the Israelis and the Dutch woofer Ingmar, got hands-on and fully involved in the process.

We went through the butchering together, learning how the different cuts are broken down, and under close supervision they even had the opportunity to safely use the bandsaw. It's important knowledge that very few people get to experience firsthand.

Now we're enjoying a home-cooked feast of lamb chops and ribs. Homegrown really is best.

These animals were raised organically in a rotational grazing system, without the stress of transport, and were humanely processed on-site. They lived a good life right to the very end. The whole system was designed with both animal welfare and environmental stewardship in mind.

This is how food production should be, ethical, transparent, local, and connected to the land.

My favourite beans are Cherokee Wax Bush Beans and often referred to as butter beans in the broader sense of tender, waxy snap beans.
One of the key things with these types of beans is regular picking. The more you harvest, the more the plant keeps producing. If you leave pods on too long, the plant shifts energy into seed production, which slows everything down and reduces overall yield.

They’re really juicy and delicious eaten fresh straight off the plant, and they also cook beautifully. The flavour holds up well, and the texture stays tender.

What I love most is that they’re not stringy. Even if you accidentally let them get a bit bigger than ideal, they’re still soft and very edible, no tough chewing required.

Full house today thanks to Redland Organic Growers Inc. ROGi and Bethania Street Community Gardens. Both groups came out for a joint venture, and I always love a bit of cross-pollination between gardening communities.
We toured the property and explored the various elements of the design and the reasoning behind their placement. We discussed several permaculture design principles, including designing with limitations in mind and designing to extreme parameters, such as rainfall events and seasonal conditions.
We also looked at the animal systems, including the rotational grazing paddocks for the sheep, and explored how the overall layout has been designed so that one person can efficiently manage the entire property.
A big thank you to both groups for your enthusiasm, great questions, and engagement throughout the day. Only half the cars on the block.

Wonderful day at the Rosewood Community Gardens facilitating a propagation workshop.
Propagation is one of those skills that really only sticks when you do it, again and again, and cuttings are a great way to get hands-on experience fast. Loved the energy from everyone who showed up: curious, engaged, and not shy to get involved.

Beautiful community space, great facilities, and even better people.

Next workshop will be at the Nourished Landscapes homestead, focusing on making your own organic fertilisers, including aerated compost teas and worm castings brew.
Happy propagating and see you at the next one

Softening the look of an old concrete block retaining wall today by planting out the block cavities with a range of hardy, predominantly succulent species.

These plants are well suited to hot conditions, require very little supplementary watering, and some are even edible. By using a diverse mix of plants, we're transforming a plain retaining wall into a productive and visually appealing feature.

We're also putting the finishing touches on the wicking beds integrated into the retaining wall. The main water reservoirs are built from IBC containers, which are incredibly practical and modular but not always the most attractive feature in a garden. Our goal is to completely disguise the IBC cages and create a premium finished product that blends seamlessly into the landscape.

The client wanted a garden that looks beautiful while remaining low-maintenance, and that's exactly what we're working towards.

And that's our meat production for the year wrapped up.
It has been a fantastic day processing our "lawnmowers" the sheep, in a humane and respectful way. This workshop was designed to take participants through the entire paddock-to-plate journey. We covered everything required to move an animal from the paddock through to the curing stage and into the freezer.
We then worked with two animals that had already been hanging in the cool room for five days and demonstrated how to break them down into the common cuts you would recognise from your local butcher. Participants learned how to do this both without a bandsaw and with one. Unsurprisingly, everyone agreed that the bandsaw makes the job much quicker and easier.
We also covered different methods of packaging meat for storage. Our preferred method is vacuum sealing, as it preserves quality exceptionally well, but we demonstrated several other options too.
It was a really rewarding day, and I'm incredibly grateful to everyone who participated with such enthusiasm and willingness to get hands-on.
Now it's time to put my feet up and enjoy some lamb shanks for dinner, lovingly prepared by my Israeli woofers. What a perfect way to finish a day dedicated to ethical, home-scale meat production. 🐑

Today is the day, a big day on the homestead!
We're putting the final preparations in place for today's sheep butchering workshop. From start to finish, we'll be covering the entire process: humane culling, processing, hanging and aging the meat, and then breaking the carcass down into the familiar cuts you would expect to see at your local butcher.
It's a hands-on, practical day focused on building skills, understanding where our food comes from, and learning how to make the most of an animal with respect and care. Looking forward to sharing the experience with everyone joining us today. 🐑

Good animal husbandry systems are essential for ease of management, animal health, and long-term efficiency, saving time, labour, and infrastructure costs over many years.

This small livestock loading ramp for sheep and goats on my property was designed so one person can safely and easily operate the entire system. Sliding gates can be opened and shut with one hand, while the animals are guided through the ramp in a calm, low-stress manner.

The system is built mostly from recycled materials and connects into sorting pens designed in a Fibonacci pattern, moving animals smoothly from large holding areas into smaller controlled spaces. It also includes an animal crush, allowing livestock to be safely confined for health checks, treatments, and routine handling with minimal stress to both the animal and handler.
Practical, functional systems like this make a massive difference in regenerative small-scale animal husbandry.
