For a long time, I thought being a good person meant keeping everyone else happy. Avoiding conflict, putting my own needs aside and feeling guilty whenever I chose myself.

And the thing is, so many of us were raised to believe that’s what being a ‘good girl’ meant.

But keeping the peace isn’t always healthy, especially when it comes at the expense of your own wellbeing.

You can be kind and still have boundaries. You can care about people and still say no. You can disappoint someone and still be a good person.

Unlearning that conditioning takes time.

Speakers are being announced over at Pilbara Women in Business Network for our upcoming conference ‘The Fresh Start Fantasy’.

Every year it’s the same promise. Come January you’ll be organised. New diary, new systems you’ll impliment, new resolutions and the feeling ‘this year will be different’.

By mid January, life has done what life does, you haven’t sustained your resolutions, your diary is a mess, you are still doing the same things and feel like you are still on the hamster wheel. THE FRESH START WAS NEVER REAL.

Join us for a deep dive into the Fresh Start Fantasy, a conference for women who are tired of being sold a version of change that doesn’t survive contact with the real world and real life.

A little reminder, there is power in recognising what is within our control and what isn’t.

We cannot control the actions, opinions or choices of others. But we can set boundaries, choose how we respond, seek support and take steps towards our own wellbeing.

Empowerment isn’t about controlling everything around us. It’s about recognising where we have agency, even when our circumstances feel beyond our control.

Focus on what you can influence. Give yourself permission to release what you can’t.

Most of us know that flicker. Someone else gets the win, and a small voice says there’s less for you. It’s a learned reflex, not a character flaw.

I felt it most strongly in my twenties. The women around me were under pressure to be the only one at the table, so they guarded their seat. Nobody had shown them another way.

Noticing the flicker is the first step. Choosing a different response comes next.

Do we actually mean "community over competition", or does it just look good on an instagram tile?

I've been a photographer for nearly 14 years. I've watched that phrase get shared across the industry more times than I can count.

Often by the same women who, a week later, post a vague story about someone "stealing" their ideas. Or leave a comment about how "some people" are charging way too little and ruining it for everyone. Or drop a targeted little remark under another photographer's work that everyone knows exactly how to read, or an unnecessary unhelpful comment on a facebook post asking for support or advice.

You can't hold both. Either we stand for community, or we're using the word to appear ‘supportive’ while we keep score.

Some of this is real. Work does get copied, and naming that is fair. But most of what I see is something else. A new photographer shooting at golden hour in the same spot isn't theft. Someone with a simliar editing style isn’t ’copying’ you. Someone charging less than you isn't an attack on you. A woman doing well in your town doesn't make you less.

That reaction is internalised misogyny. We learned early that there's only room for a few women to succeed, so every other woman becomes a threat. It doesn't disappear when we start a business. It turns into gatekeeping, side comments and guarding what we know.

And it's not just photography. Look at any industry with a lot of women running small businesses and you'll see the same thing.

We don't get to real community by posting about it. We get there by being honest about how we show up when someone else wins. Do you share her work or scroll past it? Do you comment a congratutions or a ‘this is epic’ or do you just ignore it. Do you refer her when she's a better fit? Would you tell her your pricing or share advice if she asked?

Community over competition is something you do, and most of it happens when nobody's watching. And the first step is becoming aware of our own reaction to another women’s success.
