Circular North

Circular North Empowering northern Tasmanians towards resource recovery and sustainable waste management.

Circular North, established in 2007 is hosted by NRM North, partnering with eight local councils across northern Tasmania. Our mission is guided by the waste hierarchy, advocating for ecologically sustainable development and resource recovery strategies. Formerly funded through a voluntary levy, we now operate under a revised governance structure funded by the Tasmanian Waste and Resource Recovery

Board. Australia's waste management strategies are evolving towards circular economy principles, aligning with Circular North's objectives. We aim to eliminate waste and pollution, promote product design for reuse and recycling, and transition towards regenerative natural systems. Our initiatives focus on empowering local businesses and communities to reduce waste generation and embrace circular practices. Together, we envision a prosperous economy and healthier environment for northern Tasmania, built on sustainable waste management and circular economy principles. Join us in creating a future where resources are valued and regenerated, benefiting both residents and businesses alike.

"Having grants like this makes a real difference for people in more remote communities."

That's Lauren Maxwell. She and Kane Maxwell are the team behind Flinders Island Harvest, one of the nine recipients sharing almost $60,000 through Circular North's 2026 Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Grants.

🪳 Their project takes a creative approach to a real island challenge: cardboard and food waste that would otherwise be buried or shipped off-island will instead feed a native cricket farm, producing protein for poultry feed and nutrient-rich frass to improve local soils. A genuinely circular system, built from what the island already has.

The applications were so strong that Circular North extended the round beyond its original $45,000 cap to fund all nine projects. Together, they'll divert over 350 tonnes from landfill every year, 130 tonnes more than last year.

Did you know that around 1.8 million mattresses are replaced in Australia every year, and many of them end up in landfill? 😮

The good news? Product stewardship is gaining momentum, and it's exactly the kind of systems-level thinking that helps us move toward a circular economy.

Worth a read 👇

Every year in Australia around 1.8 million mattresses reach their end of their life, with hundreds of thousands of them ending up in a landfill.

Why is that a problem?
🛌🏻 Mattresses are bulky and take up huge amounts of landfill space
🛌🏻 A single mattress will take decades to break down
🛌🏻 They’re made from steel, foam, plastics and textiles. Valuable materials that get buried instead of reused.

The good news is that this problem is finally getting the attention it deserves.
Mattresses are now recognised as a priority product for product stewardship — a shared‑responsibility approach where manufacturers, retailers, governments and recyclers all play a role in what happens after a product is used. This is how we shift our systems from waste by default to a circular system by design.

Question! When you buy a new mattress, who do you think should be responsible for what happens to the old one? The consumer, the council, the manufacturer… or all of us together?

That drawer full of dead batteries? The half-empty paint tin in the shed? The old printer gathering dust? 👀

They don't belong in the kerbside bin, but they do have a home.

Across northern Tasmania, you can drop off problematic waste for free at participating transfer stations, including Launceston, Beaconsfield, Deloraine, Exeter, George Town, Longford, Scamander, Scottsdale, St Helens and Whitemark.

What's accepted: 🔋 Household & car batteries 💡 Fluoro tubes & globes 💻 E-waste 🎨 Paint & paint tins 📦 Polystyrene 💊 Blister packs (at selected sites)

🎉Our Autumn 2026 Household Hazardous Waste collections are done and dusted, and together we safely diverted 3,080 kg of household cleaners, expired garden chemicals, and other items that don't belong in kerbside bins.

That brings us to almost 17,000 kg across 5 campaigns 👏

A huge thank you to the 82 locals who came along, and to the councils and crews who made it happen.

Couldn't make it this time? No worries, Spring collections are coming, and we'd love to see you there.

Every drop-off counts. 💚

🐇 With all the Easter excitement around the corner, here’s a little reminder that Easter foil can be recycled.

The trick is simple: scrunch all the small pieces together into one big ball, about the size of a tennis ball. This helps it get sorted properly in the recycling process.

Happy Easter, and thanks for helping keep more valuable material out of landfill.
