Supercars hit Surfers Paradise this weekend for the Gold Coast 500.

So here's a question. Could you run a pit garage off a trailer?

Lights, tyre warmers, laptops, air tools. Every bit of it draws power, and some of it all at once. That's the part people get wrong. It's not about how much you use over the day. It's what everything pulls in the same moment.

Same at home. Size the battery and inverter for your peaks, not your average. If you're backing it up with a generator, remember kVA isn't kW, and heat knocks output down.

When the grid drops out, does your solar keep the lights on?
A standard grid-tied inverter switches off in a blackout, sunshine or not. It's a safety rule that protects line crews.
A battery set up for backup, or a proper off-grid system, keeps the house running. A cheaper backup is a two-wire auto-start generator sized to run the house and charge the batteries at once. kVA isn't kW, so size it on what the house really draws.

Sydney Water used about 373 GWh of grid power in a single year to move and treat water and wastewater.
A country town does the same job on a smaller scale: bores, pumps, treatment, a reservoir up on the hill.
Every 1,000 litres out of your tap took anywhere up to about 1 kWh to get there.
So what happens to the town's water when the grid's down for a day or two?

On 7 October at lunchtime, SA's rooftop solar hit a record 2,070 MW.
Victoria's rooftops set their own record the same day: 4,191 MW.
At midday there's more sun on the roof than most homes can use. The smart part is keeping some for after dark.

Dreamworld already runs part of its day on rooftop solar.
So what would it take to run the whole park off grid?
Our rough estimate: around 4 MW of solar, plus batteries for the night equal to about 190 of the 27 kWh home systems we design.
The rides love sunshine. The animals, lights and coolrooms don't clock off at 5.

A solar car on top of the Mountain. Could the sun get it round?
Lightyear says the 0 measured a drag coefficient of 0.175 in the wind tunnel, which it called the most aerodynamic production car yet. Only a handful were built before production stopped in early 2023.

In 2018 a red original Roadster was launched on a rocket with a dummy in a spacesuit at the wheel. It's still out there, orbiting the sun.
