Did you know there are different types of steel springs inside mattresses?

Each type affects comfort and how we recycle it.

Here are some common ones we see during dismantling:
🔹 Bonnell Coils – Traditional hourglass-shaped springs
🔹 Offset Coils – Similar to Bonnell, but hinged for better support
🔹 Continuous Coils – One long wire formed into rows
🔹 Pocket Springs – Individual springs wrapped in fabric
🔹 Micro / Mini / Nano Coils – Smaller coils layered for extra comfort
🔹 Steel Frames – Used to hold everything together

At our Calen facility, all steel is removed, compacted, and sent to respective recyclers, giving it a second life instead of sending it to landfill. ♻️

A dumped mattress doesn’t disappear.

It sits in landfill for decades, taking up space and slowly breaking down. Because mattresses don’t compact properly, they create air pockets in landfill, causing instability and wasting valuable space meant for unavoidable waste.

This is why mattress dumping is a growing environmental problem and why responsible recycling matters more than ever. ♻️🌏

Mattresses are made from treated fabrics, synthetic foams, adhesives, metals and fibres. When dumped or landfilled, these materials can leach harmful chemicals into the soil and eventually into our groundwater and waterways.

Ever wondered what happens to the steel inside your mattress? 🤔

Inside every mattress are different types of steel — Bonnell coils, pocket springs, continuous wire, frames, and linings. At Incredable Recycling, these are manually separated from foam, fabric, and flock before being processed.

Once separated, the steel goes into our baler, which compresses it from all sides into neat, compact cubes — ready to be sent to metal recyclers and given a second life. ♻️

This is how we reduce bulky waste, recover valuable materials, and keep mattresses out of landfill — the right way.

We get asked this a lot, so here’s the short answer 👇

Dump vouchers can’t be used at Incredable Recycling because we’re an independent social enterprise, not a council-run facility.

Instead of dumping mattresses into landfill, we manually dismantle each one, separating steel, foam, timber, and textiles so they can be recycled responsibly. ♻️

Your recycling fee helps cover:
