🎄 Keep Your Festive Feasts Safe This Summer ☀️

Christmas brings family gatherings, BBQs, and festive tables, but it’s also a peak time for foodborne illness, especially in Australia’s summer heat. With vulnerable groups like children, older adults, pregnant women, and immunocompromised people at higher risk, food safety matters more than ever.

Here are key summer food safety reminders to keep celebrations both joyful and safe:

✅ Shop smart – Buy perishables last, transport them chilled, and always check use-by dates.
🚫 Skip washing raw chicken – It spreads bacteria. Cook poultry thoroughly to 75°C instead.
🔪 Prevent cross-contamination – Separate raw meats from ready-to-eat foods at all times.
❄️ Keep it cold – Fridges should be ≤5°C. Store drinks on ice to protect fridge temperatures.
🍖 Handle ham with care – Follow storage instructions, keep covered, chilled, and freeze unused portions early.
🍽️ Serve in phases – Don’t leave perishables out for more than 2 hours in the heat.
🥡 Love your leftovers – Chill promptly, store in airtight containers, and use within 2–3 days.
